LED's have a Positive and Negative side, standard Bulbs don't.
Have you wired the non working side incorrectly?

You should still use the original wires. One will be positive (+12v) and one will be negative (earth).
With light Bulbs, it doesnt matter which way around these are because the bulb itself doesn't worry about Polarity.
LED's are different. They ARE polarity conscious, so in order for them to work, they need to be wired the correct way around.
What colour wires do you have on the LED strips you have bought?

both sides are wired the same way but when i touch the oe bulbs to the socket the opposite side lites up

You'll have to splice the feed to the working light and cable across to the non working side.
With the OE bulbs, the current passes through one bulb, then onto the other. With the in-built resistors in the LED units, that isn't possible as the current to the second LED is not sufficient.
Splice the LIVE cable before the LED unit and run a separate feed to each unit. The Negative (earth) side should be fine as it is.
