Does stuff still play now, or is it jammed?

If jammed, stripdown.  If still working, stripdown to check plastic that operates the microswitch to tell unit to eject.  I think flap open is purely mechanical from meory

reckon the switch is next port of call.  remove facia (obviously radio needs to come out of car), and check that

suspect is the plastic button itself.  but you'll have to strip to find out

Is it possible to pull stereo out a bit then take front off or does it all have to come out

easier to pull it all out - some of those torx screws go through facia, and the clips can be fiddly

Don`t remove the fascia whilst the unit is still fitted, it will cause some nasty problems.

There are two common problems with that mech jamming, one is purey mechanical with the cartridge clips going the wrong side of the mechanism, and often cured by carefully stripping it down and reassembly, the other is the plastic lug on the flap that breaks off and does not actuate the small switch correctly meaning that the unit will not go into eject mode at all

Spares are very hard to find  :(

when it jams, it stops disks loading in my (limited) experience, so likely the switch (plastic bits)?

Yep, depending on what state the switch is in when it breaks, it can prevent it from loading or ejecting.
