Title: DIS Pack - What size sockets will I need?
Post by: Moos3h on 11 February 2010, 14:26:46
Hi all,

Doing this job with my father in law at the weekend, what sockets am I likely to need?  Someone mentioned that it's an unsual size/shape?

The car is a facelift 2.5 V6

Thanks,
James

They are actually torx bolts, 2 per dispack. You should really use the correct sized socket but if you are very careful you can undo them with a 6 sided 8mm socket although I wouldn't recommend that at all.

I have a cheap set of bits in the toolbox. Don't really see the point in buying just one because I seem to need to use at least 3 different sizes whenever I work on the car.

Mine were E10 from memory and are really a long bolt.Found it easiest with short extension onto socket/ then a universal joint onto that/then finally a long extension onto ratchet as its a bit fiddly to get at.
When refitting large blob of greaseon socket to stop bolt from dropping and put some copperslip onto thread as makes removal easier if ever need to remove again.
Its not too bad just fiddly and you are working by feel only.

Another thing, rather than trying to force out the dis pack with a screwdriver/other such brute force method, get a couple of M8 standard bolts and screw them into the holes the E10's came out of. It's threaded for exactly that purpose ;) :y

I don't remember the DIS on my pre-facelift 2.5 V6 sticking to the bracket once I had the screws out :-/

Are you describing the post facelift coil-on-plug DIS packs that sit in the cam covers on DBW (drive by wire) (2.2/2.6/3.2) cars?

My dispack just "sat"on the angled metal bracket and when the 4 long bolts were removed it was loose and free to move..........must say it was worse than "a large square peg in a very small round hole" to thread it out,so I removed the HBV and got it out and back in that way....subsequently found with wioer motor and linkage also removed there is plenty of working space.

Aye, but handy to have in your toolbox for those bastard jobs that I'm too fat for.

Doesn't appear to take offence after having a lead lamp smashed over his bonce either ::)
