If you have a saloon it is the "bee sting" aerial  :)

The radio aerial is actually part of the rear window demist wires.

And I expect it is already fitted... The spare wires in the boot are for the OnStar system, which never worked in the UK :y :y

Try putting a sim card in and see if you get a signal :y :y

if the sim isnt connected then it might not get a signal ????

the SIM could be old, been disconnected if not topped up for a year ect... you need to put a known working one in, which is difficult as the sim cards are full size.

Worth getting the number off it, and contacting o2 to make sure its still valid  :y

if you get a sim card sent to you from o2 (payg) it will come in a card for you to push the sim out of. Just leave it in the card and it shouldnt be a problem then

Is it a saloon, and do you have aerial on roof.

Contract / PAYG both will work, as long as PAYG has enough credit  :)

3 Network will not work, its only o2 & Vodafone, and any virtual operator that uses them (Virgin/Tesco)

as every one has said.
  O2 OR VODAPONE.
as for the areial the two that gm fitted were one that worked the sat nav as well has two cable connectors and a red/white plug for the ariel amp.
the second is a stubby which is purelly for the phone.

and not being smug got both on roof of mine.

4 small nails. But easier with keys.

The areial socket at back should be clipped in cage.

Check aerial is connected in drivers kickpanel

I have exactly the same problem. Have tried with Orange and O2. Same problem, SIM is read, phone book is loaded etc. but no signal. I did actually make a call once but was literally under a mast. So it seems that the aerial isn't doing its job. Two cables in the boot are "one star" so I'm told, nothing to do with phone.
System is a Phillips CRT700, Car 1999 Omega CDX, car was one year old when I bought it. I did try a Vauxhall garage (Brandish In Coventry) many years ago but the Diagnostic Terminal said everything was OK and in reality they hadn't a clue.
So, everything seems to work, SIM is read, data loaded, searches for Network, can't find a network. Ideas?

Any 02 or Vodafone SIM will do.  In my case I have an 02 PAYG SIM that works fine in that it shows up as BT CELLNET.  I don't intend ever making any calls and as such haven't topped up the SIM.  Should it ever be disconnected I will just ask 02 to send me another freebie and do the same again.
