Title: SAT NAV Insurance
Post by: JonArgraig on 07 February 2008, 13:57:01
Well the nice guy from the RAC is out side fitting a hybrid tracker/Traffic master system to the omega for this "Pay as you go" insurance, should work out quite cheap, or so I thought till I read the brake down for my "inclusive" monthly milage...

8 miles of dual carridge way a month... FFS

Any way there reviewing this as it's 30 miles of dual carridge ways just to get off the island for me.

I'll keep you guys up dated as it could be the way to go for cheaper car insurance

Not for Me I got a Quote from Them and Said I do 4000 miles to be under what i do, and the quote came back higher than my fully comp with Elephant and with elephant i can drive any other car with the pay as you drive i could only ever drive my own.

So Elephant won by 2 pounds and many many more miles in a year

Well Ive had to pay £100 up front and I'm looking at £9.80 a month going on there figures, but after the cock up with the 8 miles this will have to be seen.

Sounds a nice idea, but I'm paying about what that will cost a year minimum for 12000 miles fully comp!

What were your 'normal' quotes coming in at?

I'm guessing the savings arrive from year 2 and onwards

Well on the Mondeo ( 1.8 si) I'm getting quotes of around £450 / £500 and they wanted £300 quid to add the omega to the policy, I should be able to get the SAT based insurance on them both and pay about £500 for the pair, and as I cant drive both at once it should be a fairer way for me to pay.

Been with elephant for years with 2 of our cars, till today. Reduced cover to TPFT £230.00 but when realised no windscreen cover started having a look around. £222.28 with M&S fully comp, hire car, windscreen etc. Now with M&S.
TPFT With more than £168
gocompare.com, got to be worth a look
Oh and in case you think this is for a diesel Astra it's for SWMBO with me as a driver, Mitsubishi Galant 2.5 24v Auto   :) :) :)

I looked at that, you CAN set it up with them to suit your actual use , as opposed to soemtyhing that's silly like this..

but it ups the price, and made it less of a saving than it first appeared to be.... plus the other restrictions and the fact that it gives them the ability to track your speed , should they choose to....   and could later clobber you for additional premium....  it doesn't say any of that in the brochures and such, but it only takes a minute of thinking about the implications of a tracking system that logs your road use to figure out the whole "Big Brother is watching " scenario...

on an alternative angle , why not use the old road rather than the A55 dual carriageway...

I'm assuming, form the mileage you mention, that you're over by Valley/ treaddur bay etc...

thought about coming round either side of the island??   the north side roads out to Amlwch/Benllech, are pretty fast road, and back when I lived there,  never used to have much traffic even during silly tourist season...

same applies to the south coast route, but memory is a bit hazy on how far along you can get up towards Valley...

then drop in to m,enau Bridge and come across the suspension bridge, yeah, it's slower, but it would seem cheaper for you....

from there you can drop in to bangor, or cut around the south side , joine the A55, or use the back roads.

Got to be honest I often come home on the old road, much more fun.

But I'm having the system taken back out so its a moot point really now

So you were impressed then! I've read the other thread .....
At least you aren't putting miles on your car for them to charge!  ;D  ;D

Well the mazda bag of poo hire car is taking the brunt of my anger... shame its gutless,

It looks a great idea, with the sat nav and the speed camera warning all part and parcel for a monthly fee, it looked great. Ive just no faith in the service back up or the fitting team now

I'm surprised the fitter (or who ever wrote his fitting guide) chose to fit the black box behind the centre part of the dash. I'm sure I could have thought of easier places to fit it - behind glove box, above driver's feet or boot

Well he has, it's above the glove box, he went in the back of the radio to look for the trafic master loom so he could use that for the speaker and power on the new system, though I would of though this would of been a bit naughty re using old parts as he would not use the old trafic master switch I have and drilled the blank out next to the TC button and put one in there

Problem is, whilst having it fitted by a mobile bloke might be convenient it almost guarantees the worst working conditions possible.

I am surprised they don't build up a network of decent car audio guys to fit them where it can be done in a proper workshop, with all tools and reference material available.

Whilst some are bodgers, most car audio places are used to people bringing in nice cars, and to doing electrical work on them without rather it up.

Last night I felt sorry for the guy, he spent 2 hours in the dark trying to get it right, But after seeing the state of the dash today there is just no reason for it.

Any way, its the weekend and I'm covering the office so Ive some thing new to moan about

UPDATE !!!

We the RAC offered me £500 and a years free membership and I can fix the car my self or they will pay to fix it but they dont want any thing more to do with and will remove the tracker, so I rang Slaters, the VX dealer who has the car at the moment and was told...

"Oh yeah mate, the dayglo monkey has well f**ked it, You need the wooden dash center section and the climate control unit & some other fittings he's knackered, you sat down ? comes to £890 + labour"

Called the RAC back...

"Thanks for your offer, but you can fix the car"

VX say I'll be lucky to get the car back this month as the parts are no where to be found in the UK :(

and just for shits and giggles I'm writing to the RAC and Norwich Union to vent my anger at the fact they have had the car in the care now longer than me  >:(

Hmm. I'd have taken the 500 quid personally, and got a climate unit from a scrapper. Depends how much time you've got to spend on it though.

What a bunch of muppets!

I think it's safe to say there won't be many OOF'ers dealing with them in future! :o

I though about it, but working on the idea that vauxhall have my dash board sat in the workshop and the car out side and there still looking for any more harm say's

"Leave it to some one else to warrnty the repair"

Besides, I know the RAC can afford it but I like to think that its stinging some hard some where

Hmm. You've got a point there. Not sure what a mess you'd inherit of VX got told to stuff it back together and give it back to you either.  :-/

Best let them reassemble what they have disassembled.
