Hello out there..my first posting so go easy on me !
2.5 V6 elite estate yr 2000.
Speedo stops working, steering goes heavy traction control and ABS warning lights come on. This happens randomly and goes away just as randomly , can be when on the go or just when getting into car in morning.the fault has no pattern to it so I guess a loose connection somewhere.
Any ideas ?

Sounds like the ABS ecu is on the way out. A bit of a pig to change iirc. Others with more knowledge will probably give more/ better info. The ECU can be repaired (around £100 i believe)
Could buy a secondhand one from one of the breakers on here. Dont know if it needs pairing to the car . :-/

OK, sounds feasible , but there must be lots of connections/sensors worth trying before replacing the whole thing? thanks anyway. :)

Best bet is to get it on a proper code reader. I will, however, concur that it is 99% the ABS/TC ECU. Get one from a breaker with the same engine/gearbox/year as yours to save having a Tech2 session :y

Agreed 99.9% sure abs ecu nackered :(
Fiddly job to replace - needs patience!! :y

If the ABS/TC lights are on and the speedo has stopped working its more than likely the ABS ECU. You can buy them second hand (try Darth Loo Knee in the parts for sale section) or send yours off to BBA-Reman, they can recondition it for approx £100 +vat and postage.
