I`m not a phone expert when it comes to handsets, but have a very quick an easy question.
Will an O2 contract sim card work in an O2 payg phone or do they still need unlocking even if on the same network?
:-?
-
EASY ANSWER: No. they should all work.
-
all work together dave.depending on model and make unlock is easy via searching on google and using a code breaker, which is legal!
-
They will work on Voice and Internet on the same Network or if the phone is unlocked on any Network, however the Data Access APN for Internet access is normally different from Contract and PAYG Sims, This can normally be configured in the Phones Data settings. the only exception is Blackberry Mobiles which need a dedicated Blackberry Sim set up for Internet access.

Thanks for that .
I`m aware of unlocking etc, but I would never use the words Code Breaker and legal in the same sentance

Ah! techno'dangle berries' !! This is where I am getting confused.
Ok, heres the scenario. Missus has a contract phone on O2 (full internet access etc etc) Shes looking to upgrade the phone to something else, and has seen a really good deal on an O2 payg one and is a fraction of the price that is being asked for as an "upgrade" so you can see where I am going with this. Not interested in the payg side of things - but need to factor in any unlocking etc that may need to be done, or what restrictions on services may be? I`m assuming that using a contract O2 sim is going to give me all the access that a payg one wouldn`t normally - I`m just needing to confirm more about the phone side of it and wether it will work.

all o2 phones contract or payg come unlocked, any sim will work in them from any operator

I know I don`t know a great deal about this, but I certainly beg to differ on that one - especially on this forum.

Yes to answer your question, If I was you I would renew / upgrade the Contract Sim, but tell O2 that your happy with the phone you have so instead of a New Phone you want discount on your Airtime or a better package for the same price.
Then just buy the O2 mobile from any O2 PAYG shop.
You will need to change the APN the new Phone so you can get Internet Access when you plug in the Contract Sim, beware about the Blackberry thing though.
Give me 10mins and I post the O2 APN's up for you.

Thanks ! We already did a deal on the airtime, and the missus screwed them over on price in a way that I am so proud of !! so we need to look for a phone.
What do I do with this APN number then? is it deicated to the sim/phone/provider and is it simply a metter of entering it into a phone.
ps. I knew the Blackberries were a little different, I have one of those also myself - but is "as supplied" so never had to mess about with it.

Dave,
The PAYG Phone will have these settings:
APN: 'payandgo.o2.co.uk'
User Name: payandgo
Password: password
You need to change this for a Contract Sim to:
APN: 'wap.o2.co.uk' for WAP or 'mobile.o2.co.uk' for Internet.
USER NAME: O2wap or mobileweb (as above)
PASSWORD: password
In fact, you dont need to bother with User Name or Passwords on any Network, so just leave them blank.

You can differ if you want, but all o2 handsets have been unlocked for years ;)

Thanks all !!

Dave,
The answer is yes for the reasons described. There will be different settings for the data services.
If you take it into an O2 shop (there is one in Torquay high street) then they will do it for you there and then :y
Cheers

Not entirely correct Mr tunnie. iPhone, for example, is carrier locked...

Ah true iPhone is exception, all rest are though.
iPhone can be unlocked by O2 for a fee of just £15 though :y
