Noone noticed you said TD.....
You have a Chain (normally for life iirc)
NO belt to change :y
-
No belt on that heap of an engine ::)
I have a TD, and if I can give you 1 piece of advice:
CHANGE THE OIL EVERY 3k MAX
No messing.
The timing chain is lubricated by the engine oil, obviously. Diesels use the engine oil to carry away particulates caused by the diesel combustion process (thats why diesel oil changes are more frequent, forgetting marketing BS). This makes the oil 'gritty' which accelerates wear on the chains and spockets. Officially, to change the chains and spockets on this engine is a cylinder head off and sump off (later probably means engine removal from car), so not a job you want to do. When the chains wear, they tend to jump a tooth on the spockets. This also (officially) is a head and sump off job.
I know BMW raised the service interval from 4.5k to 7.5k, but this was for marketing. Even 4.5k is too long for this engine. If they car has not had recent 3k oil changes, do some 1k oil changes for a while, then back up to 3k.
Longer life oil will not help, as the oil needs changing due to the particulates, rather than oil breakdown.
Please, please, please heed my advice.
(Vx semi synth is around £32 for 20l on trade club, and the filter (yours will be cheaper later type) is around £6 on TC. You will need a 36mm socket for the filter as well. Also, then sump plug is prone to stripping, if yours is M12 one, double check with dealer on torque setting - I think its around 20Nm.

Hi,
Thanks for the advice, my dad works for Vauxhall so gets everything cheap anyway, first thing that will be done is an oil change, where is the fuel filter located? I like to change all the service items when I get a new car, means I know whats been done

Fuel filter is fitted in engine bay, between airbox and brake servo. Can't miss it, looks like spin on oil filter.
As its new to you, and as you'll probably be doing coolant, whip out waterpump and check it still has its impellers (they have a habit of shedding them).

Oh, and to add cruise to your GLS, just buy a cruise stalk ;) (TD takes a different cruise stalk to other Omegas, so get the right one).
-
Had heard that about the stalk, something else to add to the shopping list!

Does anyone know where to get teh cruise control stalk for a TD Omega? Can't seem to find a TD specific one?

Cheers for the part number. While ordering the bits for an oil change I got asked whether my Omega had a metal or paper oil filter? Apparantly the later type was either metal or paper, anyone know what mine is? I've pre ordered a paper one but its just a guess till I get the car on friday

rather idiots. Both types are paper element!
There are 2 types - one for the metal capped filter, one for the plastic capped one.
Look at oil filter housing, if its got a metal cap with a 13mm bolt holding it on, its the earlier type. If its the black plastic one needing a 36mm socket to undo, its the later type.

The joys of computers, he's just saying what it says on the screen, doesn't have a clue whats what with the engine lol
