Hi All,
With the kind help of The Baron and his friend I now have electric leather seats in place of the ones that kept ripping holes in my trousers!
Couple of questions, firstly, the old seats had airbags, these have seatbelt pre-tensioners. I'm scared of both! Are the connections a straight swap and will the pre-tensioners report correctly to the airbag system? If not, is it possible to fool the car into thinking the airbag is there. I don't want to find someone with a Tech2 to reset the airbag light if it's only going to come back on again!
Can anyone tell me what the cables in this picture are for? This is the loom from the car. The red & brown are power and I've wired these to the new seats motors but I'm not sure what all the others do, which are the heated seat pads etc?

Finally, I have this loom under the rear seats, is this where the loom for the heated rear seats would normally connect? I also have a red cable in this loom that appears burned and the insulation has bubbled up. Where else does this loom go?

Cheers all!

Whoops, should be in Electrical Help, sorry!

I am not sure about all, but cables wrapped up or put in a signal yellow tube represents "caution - pyrotechnics", so be careful with those. An electrostatic discharge could, in worst case, set off an airbag or seatbelt tensioner.

Are you saying the replacement seats do NOT have side airbags when the originals did? If so, they are not suitable.
Early seats (no side airbags, mechanical pretenioners, hollow headrests) can only be fitted to early (1994-1997) cars, as you will not be able to get the pretensioners or side airbags working (and heaters won't work in facelifts)
Mini facelift seats can be fitted to minifacelifts only, as you cannot get pretensioners working in earlier cars, or heaters to work in facelifts (but otherwise OK in facelifts)
Facelift seats will work in all Omegas, but the heaters won't work in prefacelifts.

I have leather seats from a 95 elite that i was planning on fitting to my 99 cd. Does this mean the seats can't be fitted, or just that the pre-tensioners wouldn't work? i'm not that bothered if the pre-tensioners work or not, as long as the electric adjustment worked but an airbag light on in the dash could have MOT consequences and would just be annoying.

ps: sorry for slight hi-jack

Not sure anyone here would recommend disabling vital safety systems on a road car.
I'd recommend, if you MUST have the rather naff Omega leather, that you get the right ones :y

It is possible to remove airbags and to fool the system into thinking that they are still inplace by inserting the appropriate electrical component.
We have done this when making dash builds, or changing steering wheels, and the airbag light will stay off, and the rest of the airbag system will perform perfectly.
Have a word with an autoelectrician, or a decent car audio shop, and they may perform this little mod for you, but I`m afraid its not something I am prepared to divulge on a forum for safety reasons.

Even without the airbags, they're still safer than the seat that came out. I've lost two pairs of trousers and a chunk of flesh to that one!
Fair enough, I was hoping it would be an easy swap, airbags for pre-tensioners. As the side airbags were an option anyway, I don't see them as essential. Having memory seats for my wife who is about 18" shorter than me is worth it!
The CD TD is a mini facelift so I should be able to get the heaters working for winter, I assume the heaters cables are the pair that's left over. :)
Once I've sorted all the connections, is there anyone in the East Midlands (or Wales) areas with a Tech2 who's willing to check codes and possibly reset?

R is changeover - is it from a 1997 model or 1998 model. If 1997 (ie, no side airbags), they are an unsuitable replacement.

when i crashed my first cavalier in spectacular style (one flip and three rolls) neither the airbags or the pretensioners actually worked, same as when my brother crashed my dad's cavalier and my mate crashed his astra. also when my brother bumped his astra at 5mph in the supermarket car park, the airbag went off and broke one of his wrists. I'm not making any particular point by the way, just a few relevant anecdotes.
would removing the seats with the side airbags disable the whole airbag system though? I'm still a little confused by this.

Yes, the airbag system will be looking for the airbags that are not present and will show up a warning light on the dash to indicate that the system is inoperative.
You will need to "fool" the system into thinking the airbags are still fitted, and then the rest of them will still function as normal.

Problem being Dave as you said in the power sounder thread, what would an insurance assessor make of such a modification in the event of an accident?

Thats actually a very intersting point, and one that I have previously asked of my insurance assessor friend.
His answer made me laugh
"Don`t give a shit about the driver mate, its the theft of the car I`m more concerned with"
Now, I don`t know if thats company policy or not, but unlike the power sounder which forms part of teh Thatcham Catagory 1 requirement to have on the, it would appear that the airbags are seen as nothing more than "Supplementry" restraints - I would think a different view would be taken on the actual seatbelt itself or Main restraint, but airbags do appear to be classed differently, lets face it, most cars even have a switch so that you can turn some of them off !!
;D

Hmm wonder if they would take that line in the event of a passenger sueing the driver for compo after an accident?
I can see them getting a lot more concerned if they spy that little bolt hole to avoid a claim.
-
As the Captain says, I think insurance would start looking at why the safety systems didn't deploy if there was personal injury involved (and remember, emergency services have started to claim on drivers insurance in certain circumstances).
Its not a line I would go down, esp just to get the rather crappy leather seats that are fitted to early omegas. Either buy the correct seats, or if that is financially not possible, get a set of the cloth ones that are always being given away for free on this site :y

And, yes, the entire SRS is disabled, not just the missing airbag or pretensioner.

Can`t disagree with that at all !!!
