Hi All,
Saturday afternoon, I had an interesting problem with the Miggy.
I tried to start it and there was just a clunk from under the bonnet and then what sounded like a motor started running very fast and wouldn't switch off even after removing the key. I put the key back in and tried to start, the speed of the motor dropped slightly but the engine wouldn't turn over and the motor still wouldn't stop!
After pulling some of the larger fuses which didn't help, I switched on the ignition and disconnected the battery which (obviously) killed whatever was running. After reconnecting the battery the car started and ran fine!
Having now typed this, the thought that occurs is a fault with the starter motor or relay as this should spin up before engaging the engine? Has anyone seen this before?

sounds like starter relay jammed, having said that not sure if td has one!! lol or the solenoid on top of starter jammed, or pinion on starter is dirty not allowing it to throw forward to engage flywheel?

Please dont take this in a worrying way.
My neighbours ASTRA did this a few weeks ago and then she started to panic, within 10 mins there was alot of smoke and the starter motor caught fire, fire was put out before any real damage occured and battery disconnected.
Fault was traced down to ignition barrel jamming in the starter motor position and keeping perminent feed on to starter motor.
So firstly get your ignition barrel checked

I don't think that's the fault on mine, just because as soon as I disconnected and reconnected the battery it all worked fine again. Not to mention the 5-6 times I tried the ignition while the motor was running ;D
It was was a worrying situation though, admittedly my first thought at the time was fuel pump, mainly because I've been having problems with that on my Pug 406 but it was *very* noisy!

Fuel pump will only get power with ignition. The fuel pump relay only gets energized with ignition.... Hmmm, check fuel pump relay. Could be sticking on? (Clutching at straws).
