secondary air injection pump, it lives under the passenger side wing & is only there to appease the tree huggers. Unplug it & forget about it if you think the bearings are goosed.  :y :y

Hi migman.

I had the same problem with my ten year old 80k 2.5 but it sounded like there was a demented donkey under the bonnet. My (very trustworthy) mobile mechanic told me it was the secondary air pump motor bearings (as Andy B says) and the Vauxhall dealer quoted £430 plus VAT! I got a used one from Omega Spare Parts on ebay for £39.99 plus £6.95 postage and it arrived next day. It still whines but is much better than the donkey noises - I'll bear in mind the free fix if it gets unbearable!

I have a quiet one in the garage, but I would simply just unplug it (as I have on my MV6)

Another almost free fix is detailed here (http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/141240.aspx) if the problem is the same, air leakage rather than bearing, which I strongly suspect.

Not as easy as disconnecting, but if you're going to leave the weight of the thing still in/on the car, you may as well have it working.

I'm eager to know if this is the same problem as solved in the link, so if someone has a noisy pump, please indulge me and have a look to see if the casing is splitting apart at the rivets (may only be obvious when running). Ta.  :y
