Title: heater / blower problem

i only got this car last week and the blower was not working.
fitted another blower motor today (found the old one had kaput baerings). put it all back together and the fan works great, heat and demist at last  :y  (is it normal that it only works when the engine is started and not just on ingition switch possition?). now i found that the fan runs on high speed all the time no matter what possition the switch is set to, even when the switch is turned to off. any ideas?

fair point kneepad  :-[

its a 1999 2.0gls pre / mini facelift.

its got 4 dials for the heating, speed 0-5, air direction, and 2 heat setting dials (right and left)

Something is not right. The fan should work when the ign. is switched on, not just when the engine is running.
The fact that it blows on fast speed regardless of the setting could be a faulty switch or a short in the wiring. There is also a resistor on the blower which could have an effect on this.
Hopefully someone with a wiring diagram could have a look and see what else could be causing this.

You could be right there Vamps. I'm only going by some other post I read which could well have been referring to the later model.

Nope. Two different types of resistors fitted

Cheers Rob that clears up that little dilemna. :y
 I was thinking that the resistor would control the speed of the blower, depending on the setting, and if that was faulty could result in the blower running constantly at full speed.

Has been known. Also will cause the fan to run on after ign. switched off

just to update this....

i spent the morning at the breakers and changed the resistor (still the same) :( , changed the speed controler (still the same  :( , (changed the wiring loom from switch to fan (still the same)  >:( , changed every relay i could find (still the same)  :'( , then finaly i changed the aircon switch as mine was a bit worn and as if by magic the fan now works.... well it turns off and speeds 1-4 work at least, no speed 5   ;D .  but having spent most the day on it i was happy to accept that for now.

i didnt think of the a/c switch but i sure wish i had, would have saved wasting hours of good drinking time on a sunday afternoon AND saved me from about 2 dozen cuts and bruises on my hands / arms from all that digging around in the dark sharp dashboard.  :'(

all i need to know now is the location of the blower relay as im almost sure that must be whats stopping it working on the highest setting?
