Did a very foolish thing at the week end, flat battery so bought a jumper pack, tried to start my 1999 3.0 elite, and , like the doughnut that I am, didn't check the polarity of the battery, instead, trusted the Vauxhall wiring. However, this has red for earth[ Why????] when nothing would work checked and found reversed leads, changed back and, while interior lights now work, the engine still wont turn over. Can anyone shed any light on this please.

I wouldn't know where to start here TBH as untold damage could have been done to any manner of systems. :-[ :-[ :-[
Does the central locking & windows work? These are electronically controlled.
Do you get a sensible display or warning lights on the dash before it fails to start?
The starter maybe controlled by the immobiliser and as that's an electronic control unit its possible that being frazzled might be the source of your problems.
Fingers crossed its somethi9ng simple(ish) for you.
-
You may well have done some damage. First of all check the voltage on the battery.
It's not a jumper pack you need but a battery charger.

Which has red for earth? The car or your jumper pack? :-/
Vauxhall's earth lead is brown and when the battery is on the car is the connection closest to you. The other connector furthest from you has a red lead & is the positive terminal.
All the fuses would be a good place to start. :-/

It's only the same as getting a jump start & if you need your car now rather than an hour or two ;)

Hi again,
Thanks for all the interest and advice. I took the jump start pack to the car again today and lo and behold it did , just, turn the engine.
The display lights and windows all work, but strangely, when I press the test button on the jumper [ when its connected to the battery ] it registers hardly any charge, but when its disconnected it says it has a full charge. I wonder if the car battery has been damaged and so reducing the charge from the jumper through to the starter motor?. As, is patently obvious, electricity and I are not natural bedfellows[ its black magic ] so this may be just clutching at straws, is there a simple way to test a battery?
-
A lot of these cheap jump start packs havent the power to start an omega. Can you try with a traditional jump start?

Agreed, however, getting a jump start is a 'get you out of a hole' remedy until you can charge the battery properly. ;)

Completely agree! Or even change the battery for a new one. :y :y

Hi again,
The jump start pack has started it before so I'm confident its up to the job. The trouble is I only use the car at week ends and its been sitting over xmas, I think the alarm or something like it drains the battery if left too long.So once its started it will charge the battery OK .

At this stage, though, it's an unknown that you need to remove from the equation. What if the jump start pack has a fusible link inside that protects it from reverse connection?
I would charge the battery properly, check all the vehicle fuses (ECUs are normally protected by a device that takes out the fuse if they are reverse connected) and then try again.
If the car won't even turn over on the starter, it points to fusible link FV 4 which is in the PDS fuse box that sits above the positive battery terminal.

I'm sure Kevin won't mind me pointing to his excellent battery test 'How to' here: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1225724099

completely flat battery will rob the starter pack, better off disconnecting battery and then conecting jump pack direct to the leads!!

Thanks to everyone for all the support and advice. I charged the battery and tested it with a multi meter [ thanks to Kev for the invaluable advice about testing batts.]Put the battery on today and, surprise, surprise started, first time. I tested as much as I could ,lights, windows, blind etc. and the only thing that didn't work was the radio/tape. The 20amp fuse looks OK [ didnt test it, but it looked whole] so has anyone any suggestions of any more radio fuses?, or other things????
Thanks again.
-
Grandmas and eggs I expect, but if you have disconnected the battery, have you input the radio codes? :y
My CCRT700 has a fuse behind the head unit - don't ask how I tracked that down! ::) ::) ::)
-
Thanks Shackeng, the problem is no life in the radio/tape to input the code, all the rest of display fine, trip distance, temp.,mpg, average speed, etc, all OK but can't get any radio display to input code.
-
As said, mine has a fuse behind the head unit which blew, and took me ages to track down. Don't know if yours has one. Ask in the Radio forum. :y HTH

What model stereo do you have?

Thanks Dave, its a CCRT 700. How do you remove the radio from the dash?.

remove the 4 grub screws from either side of the radio facia, then you need a pair of these .... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Autoleads-PC5-83-Universal-Radio-Removal-Tools_W0QQitemZ380281596792QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=198466926536&rvr_id=198466926536&cguid=b13b736412b0a47a26332ce3ffd44afd
You'll get them from Halfords or a local radio spares place .... hopefully for less than the cost of these, but it was a decent picture :y

Cheers Andy, I have got that far[ already had the 2 U clips, but it doesn't seem to want to come out. I.ll give it another try now I know thats whats to do.
Rog
well, tried again,it seems to start to come out initially but only about 2mm then seems to stick.
-
CCRT700 will have a small blade fuse at the rear, and I think also a seperate telematics unit with its own fuse also, although that one shouldn`t stop the stereo from firing up.
With stereo out, check for permanent and ignition lives in the lower of the 3 blocks at the rear of the radio

Mine is pretty stiff, but they do come out eventually. :y
I seem to remember that I (might have) put a blade down each side to release a forward facing catch. (I might be making this up!) Unless DaveDND knows better. :y

Can be a very tight fit in the cage - be carefull not to break it.

Well boys, good news, I eventually managed to prise the b----y thing out[ thats where the obstetrics training came in handy ]
Once out found the 7.5 fuse at the back, replaced that and , Hey Presto, it worked. Getting it back was a bit was a bit of a b-----d [ shouting at it helps ] but once in , coded it and back to normal.
I'd like to thank everyone that contributed, it really is nice that in this day and age, people are still prepared to help others, without a bill at the end.
I will check this site as regularlly as I can, maybe I can help someone as well.
All the best boys
