Have you read your handbook for advise? ::) You have 15 secs after turning the ignition off to disconnect your battery. :y

The 'alarm' noise you hear is part of the vehicles anti theft system, it's called a 'power sounder' and works to alert you to the fact that the car is being tampered with.
To remove the battery first of all loosen (but do not remove) the negative battery terminal, then switch on the ignition. Then switch off the ignition and remove the battery terminal with in 15 seconds.
Some people will tell you that the power sounder is dangerous, and there have been incidents involving them overheating and causing a fire... Thing is though these units are fitted into most Vx's above LS model, and you just don't see old Vauxhalls bursting into flames every where.
