Hello everybody.
Been browsing the forum for months and getting so much info and help from all of your guides and old posts, It really has been brilliant. :y
However I have a self inflicted problem and I really need some good advice on the best course of action.
My battery went flat due to me starting the car up over and over again over the course of a week or so without driving anywhere (did'nt think that could drain the battery but I've now learnt the hard way) :-[ :-[
As a result of which I had to get my neighbour to give me a jump start which he did.
Unfortunatly, he put the leads on his battery the wrong way around (black on pos/red on neg) and when I attached the leads to my battery sparks started flying everywhere which is when I realised what he had done.
I swear on my children's lives that it was him who got it the wrong way around and not me.(I'm not a genius but I'm not bloody stupid) :D
After we put them the right way round, the car started up fine however the ABS light had come on the dashboard, the speedo had stopped working, and the steering felt heavier than normal and the stereo also would'nt come on.
It's obvious from reading some old post's on the forum that I've blown the ABS ECU, but the advice that I need is what course of action to take?
Do I get a brand new one from Vauxhall, do I get a second hand one, or should I send my damaged one off to be repaired by a company that I've found on the net who specialise in repairing damaged ECU'S.
Really need some input please on whats the best thing to do.
My car is a Y reg 2.2 CD automatic facelift.
Also whereabouts is the bloody thing on my car, is it easy to get to or am I going to need a mechanic?
As for the stereo, thanks once again to the old posts on this forum I know that there is a 10 amp fuse behind the stereo which has probably blown, so I'll sort that out once I get the ECU sorted.
Sorry for going on a bit, just wanted to give as much info as possible.

Brand new vx are around the £600 mark ............. or i found this on another thead it may help "It certainly sounds like the ABS ECU is dead or dying.
As said it is a pain getting the old module out,but local place does repairs...BBA Reman at Rochester Airport Estate..turn around time if delivered and collected is normally 48 hours but will cost about £120=00 and comes with 1 year warranty.
The noise you are hearing neads investigating so would suggest removing brake disc/drum..might be just hand brake shoes are binding or need replacing as linnings have become detacted from shoe,or pads getting a bit low and metal is contacting disc."
So it may be worh contacing the company listed above

Dunno where it is on a 4 pot - on a 6 pot its on the passenger side above the abs unit and below the power steering resevoir - possibly could be in a similar area on yours.
Difficulty replacing abs ecu on the v6 is mainly due to lack of space - probably more space to work on yours.
If second hand route make sure its off same model/spec as yours (same g/box etc) or it may need reprogramming with a Tech2.

Same place on the 4-pot.....easy to change. OP, I`ve got a known good ecu from a facelift 2.2 MANUAL going cheap, depends how far away from a TechII you are

Before I posted on the forum I was edging towards getting my one repaired by a company like Bigtow suggested, and Medway is only an hours drive from me which is helpfull.
However RobG has got me curious with his offer so a few questions Rob if you don't mind mate.
I appreciate you highlighting the fact that it's from a manual car, but how much will it cost me to get it reprogrammed roughly?
I have to ask because if it is going to be over the £120 mark then I might as well get mine repaired if that's what a repair roughly costs.
I assume that untill it's been reset that the light will still be on the dash and the speedo will still not be working etc, but will it interfere with anything else?
And once it's done is it done for good?
Have you heard any storys from other oofers about the things buggering up somewhere down the line due to the reprogramming?

Before you condemn the ECU, check the fuses that feed it. Most likely it has reverse supply protection which simply takes the fuse out.

Wayne, it`s fuse #19 in cabin box under steering wheel

Kevin....I checked the fuses next to the battery (purple coloured one's if I remember correctly)...and it did'nt look like any of them had blown.
Also checked the ones under the steering wheel and only fuse no 15 had blown(red 10 amp) which I replaced.
Rob...I am in Sutton in Surrey.....it's about a 15 min drive from Croydon

Rob...I'm going to re-check fuse no 19 as suggested, and if no joy then I'm going to ring around some local garages and see how much they would charge to re-set the ECU with TechII.
If they quote me some resonable prices....how much are you after for the unit? :y :y

The ABS ECU is also fed from one of the 80A fusible links on top of the battery.
