				hi, got isssues! it started two weeks ago, i thought it was loss of power and rubbing/whining noise. took car in, was told perished seal on one of the vacuum pipes. this was 'fixed' with an o ring. today, however, more probs. at higher revs engine service/fault light comes on and i seem to be stuck in a high gear. also whining/rubbing noise has returned. after parking, turning off and on again the problem goes, but returns as soon as i rev anything past 3500-4000. i've done the pedal trick and it has come up with code 0500-speed sensor b-009 and service reminder 1700 (not surprised by this!) any help and advice wouild be more than welcome!!!
 The pipe that was 're-sealed' was on the front of the engine block, underneath the black cover.

				Suspect we need the codes from the gearbox as well...
 
 Also, how did you get code b-009 from pedal trick?  Don't reconise that engine code

				The pedal trick showed codes 0500 and 1700. I got them trasnlated to the speed sensor B-009 and service reminder from an oof posting which detailed all codes and their meanings. How would I get the gearbox codes?

 Right, you need gearbox codes IMHO - The 0500 is a signal generated (on autos) by TCM (gearbox ECU).  The 1700 (SVS from TCM) just means the gearbox has detected a problem, and has told the engine ECU about it (and probably requested less torque to be produced from engine)

				Thanks for that, can I assume that whatever is causing the noise (possible fault on pipe as before?) is being detected and thus the fault codes being generated as an alert or as a failsafe protection ? Any help with finding the gearbox codes ?

				I would be looking at checking ATF level, and seeing if there is a gearbox code relating to the ratios being not what is expected

				Is checking the ATF level easy ? never done it, and too much physical work at the moment tricky - got a bad hernia!

				1700 was the code that concerned me (well... As far as the vendor was concerned ::)) on Thursday. Also had 0120 and 0220 but the battery had been flat :y Plan to clear them all down and then see what happens :y
 
 Oh... And ATF and Filter change are on the list of jobs to be done ;)

 Not too bad, depending on how you're feeling - involves jacking the car onto an axle stand and undoing a plug under the car.  Unless you have access to a pit, in which case it's a doddle.

				Thanks a lot for advice on that. Still need to find source of noise, I gotta go out this afternoon, I'll try to identify it later.

				Just got back from short run, enough to get up to temperature though, no noise nor warning light and went through the gears ok but a little notchy(probably only appears when driven harder). it felt a bit sluggish though.

				Just got back from taking kids to school, the noise has returned. not from where I thought, its from much deeper, underneath the engine almost and a definite whirring sound when acceletator pedal is pushed (got missus to press it while i had bonnet open). and nasty acrid smell now present. Any ideas ?

				Not sure, no signs of leaks and it's only done 60,000. Gears aren't slipping, although when on A1 doing "a bit more than speed limit" a week ago it jumped out of sport mode. [smiley=sad.gif]

				Had to take it in today. ATF fried, mesh filter clogged and part of clutch plate busted, bits found in sump :( :( mechanic getting a price now from clutch/gearbox firm in peterborough :( :(

				don't know, didn't see for myself, was just described as parts of clutch plate. :( keep seeing 'thrust washer' complaints, sounds quite a common and troublesome issue  :(

				going to pick it up now. mechanic has changed gearbox oil (he said it was like water!), cleaned sump and mesh filter out. gearbox specialist quoted 2 grand for recon!! >:( stuff that !! :P he's took it for short run, says no noise nor smell yet. now i've got a big decision to make - trade in, try to get cash for parts then scrap rest or just scrap :'( :'(

 Thrust washer, just as TheBoy suggested  :(

				Before having fluid/filter done why didn`t you get thrust washer replaced. Seems false economy unless you`re scrapping it or selling it on with that known fault

				Didn't know that was the problem - i'm not very mechanically minded and with the aformentioned hernia i wasn't in the positon to delve into it myself. all i had was the symptoms as described. now in a quandry what to do for the best :-[

				given the thrust washer can damage the box, to the point it needs skimming when replaced....
 
 Id be tempted to fit a 2nd hand box - £50-100 plus labour (and maybe a thrust washer while its off and fluid change, I did when I replaced mine)

				I think i need to consider all possibilities, if to keep car at all and thus fix (2nd hand box sounds a likely route) or to trade in or potentially even break for spares or scrap. many thanks for all interest and advice given  :y :y :y

				Given you inability to lift heavy objects, rather than keep getting stung by 'specialists' who, TBH, aren't up to much, why not drive to one of the breakers/mechanics on this site, and get them to fit you a known good 2nd hand gearbox?
 
 The likes of Darth Loo-knee and Elite Pete spring immediately to mind (Lincs is such a big county, I have no idea who is nearest), though there may be others.

				Yours being an AR25, I would say £50 tops for a known good replacement box, another £50 for ATF (may as well change it whilst there), and these guys have good labour rates IME

				Im pretty sure Darth loo-knee had an AR25 for around £50 recently. :y

				Thanks for that, definitely food for thought. Dilemma is, start new job tomorrow and need car for commuting (borrowing mother's citroen c3 short term)  can only afford one car at a time and as we all know miggy's aren't exactly the most econimical motors on the planet ;)
