Sounds like the power sounder is sounding its death knell!  ;) ;) ;)

Loads of references of them failing due its internal battery dying  :y even a mention in the maint section on changing them.  ;)

The internal power sounder batteries are no longer made and the only supplier of a capatible replacement pack has prices that are more than a new sounder almost.
I made my own power sounder battery backup with bits from Maplins for under a fiver. :y

I had no trouble getting replacements for mine from Maplin - depends which battery yours has.

Yank the unit out while it is still connected, then do the final disconnection with the ignition on or even with the car running.  This prevents it from triggering.

Saw carefully around the seam, replace batteries if yours are available, glue casing together with silicone or Sikaflex.  Job's a goodun.

Getting it out:

The big green batteris in the bottom post are available from Maplin, either the three-legged version or the four legged version fits fine.

Was it raining by any chance?

I bet it was, I had the same trouble, water drips on the underside of the scuttle and conveniently the lowest point is directly over the plug of the powersounder.

I've taken mine off for time being anyway, might move it under drivers arch if I can be bothered!

Bet you a tenner it was raining.

I don't think many people associate the random goings off of the siren with when it rains, I did electrical checks, earth point checks, replaced wiring and plug, new power sounder, only to find trusty old water was the contributing factor!

Highly unlikely to be water ingress, as one of Sigma`s famous party tricks was that their sirens functioned perfectly when immersed in a bucket of water

Mine was caused by water dripping onto connector plug, taken power sounder out now.
