You have a fault with either the sensors on the front near side wishbone or rear nearside radius arm or either of the levelling motors in the headlights. A common fault is the sensor on the fns wishbone becoming detached. Despite a recent post, knackered plastic adjusters will not display this message because the headlight levelling system has no way of knowing where the lights are actually shining.  :y :y :y
A code reader will take the guess work out.  ;)

Most likely cause is the sensor on the front passenger side wishbone
Check if it hasn't become detached also if it's connected it could be stuck so quick spray with wd40 should get thinks moving again

And the main cause seems to be that the ball joint on the wishbone end gets stuck, usually sand or small stones blocking its movement and therefore the other end has to move "more than it is designed to" and the ball from sensor itself comes off. And once this has occured it will not keep in properly. Poor german design  :-X

had a day of playing with car today, took off wheels and cleaned both sensors. happy to report they not fallen off or damaged. fitted all back up, turned car on and still had the so and so message! started stripping light units out but think i need the control box that makes the lights move on the light

should they make a noise or is it a case of take one off and replace with new item and if nothing happens, try other side?

You're guessing. You need a code reader to tell you what the fault is.  :y
