I just plugged mine back in, and my knees haven't fallen off so far  ;).  It gave the briefest of squawks just to let me know it was still alive.

Or am I missing the point?

What reason would it be unwise to refit/reconnect old one?

Without doubt, get a genuine one at VX. About £60.

Without one, or with one on the car, but disconnected, you could be invalidating your insurance ........................

just unplug it, and leave it unplugged.

Your alarm will still function with it removed  :y
