Title: Fitted New Steering Wheel
Post by: amba on 09 August 2011, 11:45:00
Thought I had done it correct but now the horn has stopped working.

Disconnected both battery terminals and waited 1 hour before removing airbag and steering wheel .All put back together and thought great.

When reconnected battery horn started and unable to stop it with either the key/starting car or locking and pushing fob so decided to just let it do its thing ....all the other times I have ever disconnected battery I have never had the horn sound but just thought so be it.

After about 5 mins faint beep then horn stopped so felt it had done its thing and reset.Car unlocked and started as normal so decided all must now be ok and reset radio and cd codes.Tried indicators and wipers all worked fine.

When I tried the horn it didn,t work so checked fuse #17 and it had blown.Fitted a replacement and still horn didn,t work just a sound like a relay clicking but when held horn button down fuse #17 blew again.

Any idea what has happened as all I have done is unplug air bag...horn/radio cables under airbag cover and refit again.

I have disconnected the battery again and will wait another 30 mins before removing the airbag cover to see if anything has got trapped just never had the horn sound before when battery removed and how do you stop it going of again when reconnected battery.

My neighbours are bit pissed with a horn sounding for 5 mins.

Not sure if this might shed anymore light on problem.

Have removed airbag cover again and checked to see if any wires from horn were trapped around back of airbag or fixings.

All seemed fine and no evidence of trapped or damaged wiring.Refitted airbag cover and reconnected earth back to battery. This time no horn sounded so fingers crossed problem resolved.

Reset radio/cd codes.Turned on ignition and pressed horn button on steering wheel. Not a sound so tried again and heard a click which on investigation was the 10amp #17 fuse blowing again.Fitted new fuse and same happened again so had a look at the green relay by the l/h side of fuse box.Removed plastic cover and no burning or eveidence of arcing so refitted.

As I have never heard the horn sound when I reconnected the battery could this have been a fluke and would this sound even with ignition off. Also could the horn having been running continous for several mins actually burnt out by some chance and now causing a dead short.

Is it possible to check the horn works by just connecting 12 volts + and - across it that way I can start to elliminate things in sequence. It seems really odd that just removing the steering wheel and refitting it back with the identical audio/horn fittings that this problem has now arisen.

I hate car electrics !!!

First off I think you are confusing the alarm horn with the main horn that works from the steering wheel
There are two, the alarm horn is to be found under the scuttle panel area, remove windscreen wipers to access, you may also find a plastic siren (power sounder) in this area.
The main horn which you hear when pressing the button on the steering wheel is behind the front bumper.

I guess the fuse is blowing because you have damaged the wiring to the squib, or possibly the squib it's self.

Try disconnecting the plug for the horn buttons behind the air bag, replace the fuse & see what happens. I wonder if there's a fault/short on your new steering wheel's horn buttons or wiring to them. You could also try using the horn buttons from your old (known to be working) steering wheel & fitting them to your new wheel.  :-/

All the connections from behind the steering wheel are the originals.I removed the original wheel and the horn and audio wiring .Fitted new steering wheel with all existing wiring connections and fitted air bag.

The moment I connected up the battery the horn(unsure which one)started sounding a continuos sound as if somebody was pressing the horn button.

In my astonishment that I had never had this problem when I had disconnected battery assumed it would run its cycle and stop.Well it did after about 5 mins almost sounding like it had been strangled and then stopped.Checked fuse #17 to find it had blown.

New fuse fitted and everytime horn button pressed you could tell there was a short as interior light dims but still no horn.

Have just removed airbag again and thoroughly checked all connections whaich are fine/no split wires and as said all fittings are original and existing.

Is it possible I thought the horn sound I first heard was the main car horn caused by the steering wheel button not being fitted properly and as I left the main car horn running continuosly for over 5 mins it has cooked the horn under the front wing.?

Disconnect and put 12v to it see if it works

Just done that RobG and it looks like running the horns continuos for 5 mins + has sent them to an early grave.

Seems like I didn,t get the horn button correctly seated when fitted the airbag on my first attempt and this in effect made the horn sound .As I thought it was the powersounder.(odd really as it has never worked before when battery refitted) I just let it running ,until it just pettered out Now seems I have killed them.

Now on the lookout for replacement set.
