I'm just stripping an Elite at the moment - it's got a 6-channel stereo almost exactly identical to the Bose in layout, but is made by Philips.
having not seen one of these before, can someone fill me in as to its main details - such as does it work to the same low line-level as Bose, or is it normal.
I'm intending to uplift the whole setup into a fecelift car, thus avoiding having to find a Bose-compatible stereo for it.
-
sounds interesting :-?
could you post the model or model number or upload the photo ::)
-
As far as I was aware, it runs "Normal" low level voltages and has the potential to be run with other head units also.
Seem to recall they sounded quite good
-
well, we'll see I guess.
I've just bought a plasma cutter, so am able to do the holes for the speakers now 8-)

HU is Philips or the amplifier is Philips? HU's were made with different brands, VDO/Philips/Siemens

Back then it would have been a Philips head unit running a Philips Amp
Siemens / VDO brand names only came along later as they took over Philips and changed the names
;)

I don't currently have a head unit for it, but would like to use a F/L Omega one - might try to find a Philips one just to see if the cd changer control works....
-
2woody - it was the 'premium' sound system fitted to pre 1998 Elites. Whilst I wouldn't want to disagree with Dave DND, IMHO the Bose setup sounded much better. No idea if that was due to other factors, such as GM still using poor speakers with the Philips stuff.
What HU are you using in the facelift, as none of the standard units have a line out. *Some* CCR2006/CCRT2008 can be programmed for Bose, all NCDC ones can. If thats a line you wanted to go down.

To be fair, I said "quite good"
Maybe I should clarify that a little more then.
Doesn`t sound as crap as the standard setup, and because it uses a standard Philips platform, you can build onto it and improve it, unlike the Bose system, which is what it is and cannot be easily improved or modified
Is that better?
:P

I would imagine the original head units were SC804's, whihch weren't without issues as I recall.

Hmm. Would that go well with an LPG tank in place? 8-)
You can always bring the amp over next time you're down this way and we'll find out what its' input preferences are.

it's going in my silver '02 saloon, which is not getting LPG.
Mind you, the estate that is getting LPG is getting a tank under the floor. The spare wheel well's coming out to allow a flat floor.

that I'll do. It might even be in the car by then ( 20 September or thereabouts )

good point - I'll check if the amp is expecting speaker level or line level inputs ( simple harness check )
When I've finished this work, I'll have only two Omegas left, one with a Bose and this unit in the other.....
-
Fairly sure it was looking for a speaker level input, between 5W and 8W - think it was the old SC804 that ran it?
Also think it was Pre-BOSE, so none of that nonsense to worry about !
HTH

ISTR that there's not a lot of space to be gained unless you modify the fuel tank :-/

entire fuel tank's coming out in favour of the largest LPG tank I can get in, plus a very small fuel tank shaped to fit in the space left.
I really don't do the "tank-in-the-boot" thing

I thought that would probably be the case ;) :y
I looked into many different options but I couldn't justify the extra expense/effort of doing it which is why I went for the raised floor option :y I'm also not as skilled and fortunate as you to be able to do that and still have another vehicle on the road ;)
Good luck with it and I look forward to seeing the results at some point :y
