am working in taunton for next 6 weeks so thought i'd fly the missus and little n down for a week (saves me going home and gives them a week away). just been online to book flights and nearly died. to fly from manchester to exeter will cost a total of £637.81. out of curiosity i priced up flights to dubai £571.74. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE >:( >:(

Try www.flybe.com They are cheap enough if you can book far enough in advance.
If last minute ie within a month forget it they will all sting you for cost.
They seem to sell so many seats at one price, once there gone the last few seats are terribly expensive. I presume there priced for last minute business travellers.

Price up the train - that shouldn't be anywhere near that expensive, that said I haven't used them since they were called BR!!!!

Air Southwest, Manchester to Bristol, £272 return for one adult one child.
Bristol airport is as close to Taunton as Exter, just down the A38.
You book direct on line with Air Southwest. :y

have you tried flying them into Bristol, you have access to more flights and carriers and might get a better deal.
its as far to Exeter as it is to Bristol from Taunton
Edit didn't see Golfbuddies post :-[
mental note read the whole thread before adding something :-/

go for train travel. you'll either get a direct service or via Birmingham New Street. Cross Country have got some really cheap tickets and you may be able to get this for less than £20. Look into first upgrade as well. may only cost £10 at the weekend and it will be a treat esp with a little one.
Speaking from experience, you'll need to work hard with the online ticket engines such as www.virgintrains.co.uk to make sure it shows you all the cheap tickets. just don't take what it offers you initially and look for single tickets.
Now you're all going to call me a trainspotter. I'll deny it!
Sadly my job means that I spend 4 days a week travelling by train AND I don't work for the railways
