Post by: JamesV6CDX on 01 March 2008, 17:07:30
What's wrong with this rear brake caliper, then?

I was winding in the piston with a clamp... it was being a bit stubborn.. and broke a chunk outta the piston!

I've put all the brakes back together and they seem OK, but I'm by no means happy about that caliper, so I intend to replace before the car gets used !!

As long as the piston seal is intact you should be ok for now. Shame it couldn't be repaired with something like chemical metal.

There are two types of rear caliper from memory depending on whether you have vented or solid rear disks. I think they are also the same as Senator, Carlton and possibly Vectra B V6 calipers so you shouldn't have too much problem getting one.

I doubt that would be substantial enough for a brake component?  :-/

No probably not. Only really temporary to get you to the scrappie. Piston needs to be able to slide cleanly.

Shouldn't be to hard to get one or two calipers from a scrappy or eBay, though I think i'd be tempted to fit new seals on them.

It's not fitted to the car and has no pads in it. So stoping will be FUN  ;D  ::) or am I just a late with my answer

mate, if it's being that stubborn then either it's not going in dead straight , or there's already a corrosion line in the cylinder lining and it needs replacing anyway....

getting them to go in dead straight is something of a black art...  it doesn't take a lot for them to go awry, and then you can easily end up with binding brakes as a piston partly seizes due to incorrect alignment... that's what I thought was wrong with the Sintra's brakes to start with....    that some muppet at the VX garage had stuffed them during it's last service...   till I dismantled and re-did them...  only to find the same issue....

or, someone forgot to slacken the bleed nipple far enough to allow free flow .....  :-[

(brakes are about the one thing I'm still au fait with, i am still happy enough to tackle myself as they don't require as much spinal torture as engine bay work...     )
