Got a letter today, from some who is a deptuty Manager / File Decsion Maker?
They said:
"I have been informed you are the owner of Vauxhall Omega Elite V6 S430..
To assist me with my enquires can you forward details to this office, from whom you bought the vehicle and the date the transaction took place"
Slightly worried at this...
Far as i know car has never been to Cumbria....
I bought it off James, who got it off Max.
The log book was signed by Max, James fixed it, i bought it. signed the log book, dated both signutures and posted the log book off.
Any ideas what to do? I am guessing honesty is the best policy??? Ring up the office who sent this and explain what happend and tell the truth?

Its got my full name including middle name.... not sure how fleabay would have got that?
-
or even a cloned car in cumbria
scam sounds more likely, since police obviously know the car is registered to you they'd be more likely to contact you in person
a mate of mine sold a car to a guy, a week later the police knocked on his door cos it had been involved in a hit and run

in January 05 i had a brand new vx zafira in february the speeding
tickets started to arrive .On average one a week for two months give or take a week . After a lot of phone calls to Police forces all over the country it was an Audi A4 they wanted that had mistakenly been given my reg number by the supplying dealer.

Luckly Cumbria is a long way away, and i work in London. So i can prove easily was not me or the car! :)
-
i hope it comes to nothing mate
-
I would guess at a potential cloned plate....
Call them during the day and speak direct to the named person.

Will do, cheers :y
Max had it for 3 years or so i think and i have the invoice from when he bought it.
So we know the car was his and now mine, suspect someone has cloaned the plate.

my old Passat was cloned for a while, the police thought it was me who owned the clone, they would not believe me until i took them to the Main dealers to confirm it was an original, it was a testing time for a week or so, the cloned car was noiticed originally in london as it was clocking up conjestion charges in london and the bills were coming to me >:(
it was found parked illeagally and lifted in london some where then they came to see me about the outstanding tix etc, i must admit i thought the officer who came initially was sympathetic but the investigating officers treated me like a crim. the look on their faces when the local VW dealers confimed my car was original was great, they made the error of travelling to the dealers in my car, i drove off and left them there, :P. they wernt to happy wen they picked up thier car from my house ;D
my response was oh yeah i forgot :question :y

I'm gobsmacked....
I know why Cumbria wrote to ME.... LAST F'ing YEAR! My first speeding ticket in 10+ years.
Why the f*** they're writing to Tunnie i have No bloody idea... but since my Speeding ticket was wayyyy before the car died, or was fixed, or sold on, or whatever.... surely even muppet beaurocratic tosspots can work THAT out... what they think they're doing is anyone's guess.
Pass it on to me Tunnie, and I'll go shove it up their sun no shiny.

Not quite.. had similar problem, officer wanted me to produce MOT, insurance etc, I said you have the reg number, you can get these details off the DVLA... officer said that since I was not investigated for a suspected crime (some else hit my car), the data protection act prevented them from accessing my details on the DVLA database... so if the copper needs info from you but you are not a suspect, he has to ask you (nicely..) because he can't access national databases and look you up.

Yes, that could be right. I asked the Police to do a number plate check for me for work, they used to do it in the past without any real problem. Because i was not carrying out a particular investigation they would not do it. More than their jobs worth nowadays without a specific investigation. Immigration, well that sems to be a different story, information over the phone without them clarrifying who I was, a worry.

Mark - I would say the cop in your case was being a pedant.... Your car was struck, therefore involved, thus more than able to justify that you have or do not have, insurance cover for the vehicle being that it was upon a public road. That info would be for the use of the cop concerned and not for further dissemination to any other party....
Mike - in your case, your reason for the check was what, exactly? If no justifiable reason directly related to Police work of the officer requesting the check then, yes, the Data Confusion Act does specifically excell in such things, and with good reason.... Your info is exactly that. Your information details. You would not be happy if someone abused the system to reveal your details unlawfully. If you wanted keeper etc details, simply fill out a form at the Post Office, pay the required fee and the details will appear on your doorstep sometime soon thereafter direct from DVLA, all legit and above board. You are entitled to see who the vehicle is owned etc by, but you do have to go about it in a legal and proper way.... :y

You are right, no argument from me. Without going into detail, on here, of parts of my job, I do undertake enquires, only the Police do investigations. Above a certain level then I can obtain information for legitimate purposes, and the Police team I work with are great, no problems. At the point I was referring to they had not reached that point, subsequently however they have and I am currently undertaking joint, with the Police, enquiries/investigations and can now ‘run the number’, didn’t need to as I got the information from the subject. Currently making arrangements, on behalf of the Police, to visit with SOCO certain places. Long story, not for here. :)

Looks like the case for me then? - They have a 'event' logged say speeding or ticket of some kind say in 2007 or early 2008.
I have taken it late January, after said event.... so they want to know when i bought it? And because i am not a suspect they cannot get the details from the DVLA?
-
And because i am not a suspect they cannot get the details from the DVLA?
Surely they already have your details. How else would they have contacted you?
I guess they are probably trying to establish who was the registered keeper at a certain date. Since it has changed hands there's some ambiguity to resolve.
Kevin

Just say you bought it xx date, it is their job to find who was driving it last year not yours

Thing is its only been me and Max, he had it for several years, i got it just recently
-

Yes but if that registration number has popped up somewhere and needs to be traced, and the car is flagged as having changed hands recently they need to establish who the keeper was at a specific time. DVLA details won't identify this down to the day or hour. Could have passed through a dealer, etc. without the records having caught up.
You need to phone the guy and establish what is going on. Car has been on EBAY and had quite a high profile on here so it's not impossible that the plate has been cloned or something. :-/

Crikey, I nearly pooped myself when I read this thread!
Erm, the logbook was transferred directly from Max to you. (Who I recall said something about a ticket up north some while ago...)
If I can assist then do let me know... but I doubt it's me they're after :-/

Only just seen it now... sorry been all go here at work (at table football ::))
I rang Cumbria Police today... explained when i bought it and who from.
They asked me to fax a copy of the V5 log book, which has the date of transfer on it.
I said i have the log book with the date (29th Jan) so the DVLA must have it, she said they might be a problem with DVLA, can you fax it it in :-/
She said there was a speeding ticket to Max in November.
Ok i said no probs, i'll fax it Monday morning.... i gave them contact numbers and hung up.
10 mins later got a call from them saying they have found the correct DVLA records and that shows me as the keeper on the date i said, but they still want a copy of the log book :-?
They said nothing is comming to me, as i did not have the car then, but it looks like Max you might be getting a ticket! :(
They could have done it a different way, cause i shat me pants when i got that letter yesterday!
-
That's gotta be a real sh$tty job, grassing up your mate!
Respect to Max for taking it on the chin :y I still think you should have played the 'cloned vehicle' card! ;D Serves you right though for having such fast motors! ;D ;)
-
I would have said the Information is at the DVLA on the logsheet and you don't know the previous owners name and address.....
-
I would have said the Information is at the DVLA on the logsheet and you don't know the previous owners name and address.....
Tbh that would a bit fishy.... they would have said who did you buy it from then, if i said 'a mate' it would be like one of those chavs off road wars.
Honesty was the best policy i think.

Oh I fully agree mate...
Plus, it seems they already knew who max was based on previous correspondance...
Shame on the ticket though :(
I'm still waiting to see if I get one!

I agree Tunnie, you have acted entirely 'properly': honesty is your friend; half truths or just reluctance presenting fact in such matters-legal can rebound and have serious consquences.
James, whilst I see your perspective; I`m of the opinion that there is no place for 'creative thinking' when the Police have you in their sights. ;)

Purely as a scenario:
What if, I see an advert on a forum for a car for sale, and arrange to go and see it. I like it, and I buy it.
I fill out the logsheet, sign it, and HE returns it to DVLA.
I drive off, happy with my purchase, but genuinely don't remember his full name address, and I've not got it stored on an email etc.
I agree with your thoughts, I would do the same... but just to offer a twist....

In other words - we don't HAVE to make your life difficult, but we can so we will. Make sure it takes you 14 days to send it, just in case they're relying on it for Max's address. [smiley=evil.gif]

am I missing something here?
v5 has a previous keeper section....isnt that all that is required?
-
I wonder if there would be any legal comeback / reprecussion, if you declined to respond to their letter at all?
-
I wonder if there would be any legal comeback / reprecussion, if you declined to respond to their letter at all?
Well, it's not a producer, as such, just an "If you would send us a copy it'd be awfully kind", so I imagine the answer is probably no.
Kevin
-
I don't get it.....
They already have my address.... and it was dealt with last year.
there's NO ambiguity whatsoever Tunnie, it's bugger all to do with you, and they're basically , for some gawdforsaken reason, known only to the muppets, harassing an innocent bystander...
if brains were dynamite, I suspect they'd have trouble lighting a fag.
-
I'm not in any way giving legal advice here, but I'm a contrary ar$e and I'd wait for a few more letters before replying. Let them do the chasing. You first thought was that it was a scam after all.
