Bought a Golf GTI the other night at the auctions ::) and it's got a nasty grinding noise (N/S/F) when driven hard in 1st gear, it's fine if pulling away gently.
I've done a few figure of 8's in the car park in both directions and backwards, but no noises. It only happens when driven hard.
Any ideas? :-\
-
is it by any chance a 1.8Turbo?
-
No it's an 02 2ltr 115bhp.....
-
how can they justify a GTi badge with 115bhp!? ;D
-
I know!! ;D It's alot of fun to drive, but my Mig has more power.... But what about the noise Tunnie? ::)

I've no idea! :D
Disc/Wheel bearing? :-\
-
CV joint or wheel bearing were my initial thoughts, but I've done a few figure of 8's in the car park but all is quiet! Then it was suggested that it might be an engine mount, but it only does it when driven hard in first! If it was an engine mount surely it would be noisy all the time and the same with the wheel bearing? :-\
-
also does it if you boot it in 1st with a decent amount of RH or LH lock on?
-
Yep! Pull away gently and it's fine. Also fine if booted in reverse! It's only done 62k and the stem seals are gone as well!! I always thought VW's were bullet proof!! but never had one before. :-\ This one's obviously had a hard life..... :'(

surely at only 115bhp thats the only option ;D ;D joking aside a mate of mine had a similar thing with his gti turned out to be a gearbox problem which according to the box specialist that done his is a common thing on golfs that have been ragged a lot
-
unfortunately the reliability is just a mere smokescreen their not that well built. mk4s handle well though and i thought the 2.0 was 150bhp? same as the 1.8T? as VAG ran out of 1.8T engines and thats why we had a 2.0 golf?
the 1.8T is prone for gearbox problems all that TOURQE hehehe the 1.6s eat gearboxes as well i hear 1.4s are the most trouble free
-
Thanks Guys :) Yes the gearbox has been my thoughts ie if it's had 62k of being thrashed away from traffic lights then it's bound to be knackered!!
Funny thing tho, I've just been out in it and took a country road. Couple of tight left hand bends, took them hard and fast, no probs. Coming back tho when the bends were right-handers, again hard and fast, but got 'the noise'...... :-\

The gearbox VW fitted to 1.6 MkIVs had the crown wheel riveted to the differential.
If caught before the rivets let go there is a straightforward fix using bolts from VW to replace the rivets. When the rivets let go the crown wheel chews through the gearbox casing :( which takes a bit more fixing..............
Don't know if they used rivets on the heavier gearbox crown wheels. :-\

bottom suspension play- had 1 last week in straight line was noisy but not on turns so check them 1st

Hi All,
I've just jacked up the front of my Golf and when gently turning the wheel back and forth there seems to be alot of play and there's a sort of clacking noise when the drive shaft engages..... Is this normal?
There dosn't seem to be much play when pushing pulling the wheel and it spins smoothly... :-\
-
When you jacked it up and turned wheel did you hold drive shaft? if wheel moved and shaft was still(slack) then thats ya problem - drive shaft.
-
No I didn't hold it, but I could see that the driveshaft wasn't moving when the wheel was! and when I checked the drivers side there was play there as well. I waggled the wheel with my foot and stuck my head near the gearbox. The clacking sound seemed to come from where the driveshaft goes into the gearbox....
If that makes sense? ::)
I'll check again tomorrow, and will hold my shaft while waggling!! :D Cheers Symes :y
-
It turned out that 'The noise' was caused by a sheared gearbox mounting bolt, so there was some serious vibrations when driven hard!!! :y
-
That sounds like a result, to me! Cheaper than a new gearbox/driveshaft/clutch/etc ;)
-
Which is no real surprise really... Sounds like it's been thrashed to within an inch of its life though :( :(
-
Yes definately a result!! :) and yes It's probably been well thrashed!! :o Stupid car to buy at the auctions really, but I had a WTF moment! ::)
The good news is that I will at least break even on this one and hopefully might make a small profit!! :y
