At last my to do list and car needs list has shrunk dramatically, I was thinking of getting rid of my Saloon to get an Estate Omega, but the Frontera I bought 2 weeks ago is doing the job of the Estate car perfectly! So my Saloon is here for keeps.
I had a MASSIVE string of post it notes stuck to my bedroom wall with everything I wanted to do to the Omega and everything that needed doing, and had look at it twice today when I realised how many things have been crossed off.
And the thing that was worrying me the most, most recently was my gearbox sticking in 3rd a bit if I didn't run through the gears properly 3 times before I drove off from the car being parked up for any amount of time.
I have ordered all the parts for the Gearbox service, and after carefull thought, I bought a new filter.
The 2 sump gaskets and the filter from JPAT including VAT and cheap standard 1st Class Postage cost me a few pennies under £27.
I bought the Dexron 3 oil from Eurocarparts, Carlube brand which has never caused me any grief in the past, that was £27 for 5.5 litres after a promotional discount.
And I went to my local vauxhall dealer and bought a brand new gearbox sump plug for a few pennies under £7 which I am collecting on Thursday morning.
And I bought a manual pressurised fence sprayer from Ebay through the Argos clearance thingy for £10 minus a few pennies to pump the oil into the car and it even says the litres on it so I can put the right amount in first time round. It is a 6 litre container, So I know I can put the 4.5 litres I need straight in.
£71 roughly is what I have spent and for the first time in a while I am happy to have spent that after being quoted over £200 all in for the same parts from my Vauxhall dealer, and the parts are all Genuine GM I was told on the phone. So very happy.
So providing the weather is good down here on the coast this weekend, my Omega will be off the road having a gearbox service, followed by new fuel filter being fitted, and some fault finding on my I.C.E as the wiring seems to have come loose or maybe I have blown some speakers as I know I managed to blow my subwoofer ;D
This is the Omega when I went to the beach today:

This is my trusty Frontera that has made it possible for me to keep my Saloon:

Yes, I know, More photo's ;D ;D ;D
This time only 3 to start with.
-
Looks like you were caught on CCTV ;D
Well done with the list though; :y
Personally its the estate every time, saloon's are not big enough for me. ???
-
Was never a lover of estates... too much of the boy racer in me still (I'm 40 now though) ::)
But after changing my saloon mig for an estate, I must say, I've found it so handy and wonder how I got by without one, lol.
Still miss the saloon some days though :-[
-
That is not me driving lol. I took the pictures from my bedroom window with my mobile, hence the dodgy quality ;D ;D ;D

My car has now had a BRAND NEW gearbox filter fitted with new ATF Dexron 3 Fluid, and new sump gaskets and sump plug, the only thing that didn't get done today was the gear selector switch being cleaned as we ran out of time. The car drives totally different and the original filter was totally gunked up as was the magnet. And the oil was just yukky!
I used the recommended method from oof for putting the new oil into the gearbox, (Hand Pump Pressurized fence sprayer) except I got mine from the Argos clearance on Ebay for just under £10 delivered and was amazed how well it worked!

So thanks to my best mate coming over today and him doing all the hard work, I now have a very happy, healthy and reliable 2.2 Petrol Omega 2.2 Auto.

My next job from Tuesday onwards is to fit my day running LED lights. My mate and I got the wiring routed and ready, just need to install the LED lights and connect them to my cigarette lighter socket.
:) :) :) :) :) :)

All your food is going to taste very odd once you've washed the dishes in that bowl tonight.. ;D

I always buy a bowl specially for oil changing.

I have added another modification to my car.
Day running LED's.
These have been on for a week now and I am loving them.

Not on all cars. However I have wired mine up to the easiest wiring loom I could think of, My car CD Player power loom so that they come on with the ignition and go off with the ignition. Only thing is they probably wont pass an mot as they are not E marked as mine are cheapies from HK.
But as things were going smoothly for me and my Omega, the Frontera blew both the master and slave cylinder and the flexi pipe at the front of my Omega is knackered so my Omega is very very loud and quite thirsty at the moment.

Defo! He got 16 cans for the gearbox work, although I did all the wiring for the day lights he attached them to my grill as my joints got too bad for me to get o n the floor.

So .. if they are bright enough to be effective during the day .. they will BLIND everyone coming towards you at night.
That is why they are DESIGNED to turn OFF when the normal car lights are put on.
and why, IMHO, DIY light fitting should be illegal .... you have modified your car to look "pretty" in your eyes, to the danger of all other road users.
bloody stupid. :(

Audi's don't turn off with main lights on. And they don't blind anyone, neither do mine as ALL DRL's are the same brightness or slightly darker than the dipped headlights and mine haven't been fitted for looks but for safety!

At the end of the day mate, it's your baby and you do as you please to it and as long as it's not breaking the law or dangerous, carry on!
I think it looks good :y

Lets make things simple for you to understand, as you clearly need it.
Daytime Running Lights
Thats Daytime Running Lights
See those first 3 letters? Day
You do not use them at night you idiot. You will be blinding everyone in front of you. Simple. Fact.
Taken from Regulations regarding DLR:
DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS REGULATIONS
New cars must be fitted with DRLs to comply with the daytime running lights law. However, many drivers have been fitting them to older cars to take advantage of their benefits. If you're going to do this, follow these simple guidelines:
Make sure the lights comply with safety standards - the Ring Daytime Running Lights sold at Halfords are marked ECE R87 so you can be sure they're street legal
Only use your DRLs during the day - they will dazzle other drivers at night
Most DRLs automatically switch off when headlights are turned on. If yours don't, make sure you manually switch them off when it gets dark
I'll echo the above, you being dangerous & very stupid >:(
-
You do not use them at night you idiot.
whether he's right, wrong or very wrong i don't think there's any need for patronising him
-
Whilst might not share each other's views and tastes, let's not descend into personal insults, please. :y
-
why on earth would you power Day Time Running Lights from the cd player...and Day Time Running Lights are not to be used of a night...but then mr plod will tell you that when he impounds the car as it is a danger to other road users
-
You do not use them at night you idiot.

I agree,That was a bit OTT from Tunnie.
-
well if it was or was'nt thats not the issue...there are enough nerderwells on the road without adding to them with someone misusing Daytime Running Lights...the clue REALLY is in the title :y
-
DLRs should not be used at night. We've all seen how dazzling they can be during the day when properly fitted by the manufacturer, so DIY'd, unaimed/unmanaged at night is wrong for very good reasons.
TBH, I struggle with the concept of them, obviously the EU thinks we are all too stupid to turn dipped lights on if visibility is poor. My solution, shoot the drivers lacking the brain capacity, reduce the amount of stupidity in the gene pool.
I *REALLY* struggle with the DIY ones - surely even the most chavastic dreggs of society must realise they look abysmal :-\
-
one would assume so....but then again ???.. :y
-
It's the DRLs on the latest shitroens that I can't understand. Surly any tinker can see they look hideous. Yet people still buy them. Guess they must be really cheap. :-\
-
If we go back many years to Volvo having running lights, they are bright during the day but dim, at night, when the car lights are put on, aftermarket ones are usually not fitted / wired correctly so do not do this hence why they will dazzle oncoming drivers at night.... :)
-
Audi DRLs dim when headlights are on, and even when the indicators are activated. All designed for those who delight in the lifting of other bloke's shirt flaps, IMHO, but there we are...

On cars I do, I do however seen them quite effective on motorbikes, maybe due to the height.
Think its the Ducati Multistrada? :-\ The DLR's are built into the mirrors, so the light is considerably higher, really makes bike stand out.
Can see them here:
They look awful, but really did make the bike stand out during the day.
Can't see point in them fitted to cars....

........
I start work at 8am so it's dark as I set off & is almost daylight by the time I get there. It never fails to amaze me the number of drivers with NO lights at all on their car, presumably under the impression that if they can see, they can also be seen! So the EU is correct in their assumption for many many of drivers. ???
-
I haven't bothered to reply to the insults above as I read what was being written and wanted to get some proffesional MOT tester advice and Local police advice as well as taking my baby down to the VOSA centre in Hastings.
This is what I got told:
MOT man:
They are perfectly road legal and will pass an mot as the car is registered before March 2001.
Traffic Police:
Perfectly legal day and night and in there opinion do not cause any dazzling issues to oncoming drivers un like the fog lights if they were miss used. Luckily I do not miss use my fogs.
VOSA:
Because they are white and not too bright there are no legality issues on the road and I can not be fined or done in any way at all.
The DRL's I have fitted don't dazzle in the slightest. In sun light you can't really see they are on unless you look close but in dull weather they are brighter than sidelights but not any where near as bright as headlights.
DRL's don't change there brightness from factory fitting at all, This I checked with Citroen which is 2 doors up from me and Audi near my mum's. They may appear to change brightness to the un trained eye but this is just down to the brightness of the dipped beam lights and dependant on the level of natural light.
So in effect DRL's never known as DLR's!!! Have technically been named incorrectly as they are just purely safety lights.
In my experience since I have had them fitted, My car has been noticed more, especially from where I have to pull out into oncoming traffic to get off of my property and I have had less idiots swerving round me last minute at speed and more people slowing down and taking care to go round me safely or letting me out.
I am not going to sit here and type lots of insults as I am simply not that pathetic, but appreciate before anyone tries to put legal facts down that they should get the information correct first, As I have done. :P
And the reason it is wired to the CD Player power loom is because it was easier to get to than the cigarette lighter loom that I was going to use and the only thing I knew would power down when the ignition is switched off and would power up when the ignition is switched on.
THE END!!!
I don't know why a certain few people get there knickers in a twist with in accurate information and find it really irritating that when they are proved to be in the wrong that they go for personal insults.
My threads are in NO WAY put on here to create these situations, so if you have nothing nice to say or nothing constructive to say. Then dangle berries to you!
NO NEED TO EDIT ADMIN as I used your replacement words instead ;D
And no matter what nasty things are put on here, it will not stop me doing what I want to my car. I only come asking for advice and help on how to do things, or find them. And if someone says to me it's not a good idea as it really will affect whatever on the car in a bad way then I wont do it.
But listen to this. And I hope this annoys those who hate me and my car. I am fitting DARK TINT FILM to the rear lights of my car which I have already checked the brightness for safety and have been told they are bright enough for the road even with sunlight on them legally.
So if you hit me up the back end in an accident I will simply tell you to go and get your eyes tested.
Have a nice evening everyone.
All the best. :y :y :y

I knew there was a reason I couldn't be arsed to read this thread, seems I was right.
Can we have bigger buttons for iPhone please admin....?

Ouch!
The claws really came out on this one. I have never bothered responding to these types of thread in the past, where they tend to get out of hand, as I do not consider myself an established enough member to comment but I have never known a thread to get so personal so quick. :-\
I do not know Car-nut but imagine he is quite miffed at the speed of the animosity directed in his direction. He may or may not deserve it, I really don't know, which is why I normally stay out of it.
Shall I re-write the script on this one for the sake of the OOF spirit (not that anyone cares probably). :-[
Car-nut says: I've fitted DRL's to my car which are permanantly on.
OOF member replies: I say old chap, I suggest you check the legalities of doing that before you end up in bother. They can be rather dazzling at night old bean.
Car-nut replies: Thanks for the advice, I'll do that.
There, all sorted in a polite manner and everybody's happy.
Just my thoughts. Here endeth my sermon. ;) ;) :y
Regards
Alan

Exhaust now fixed, although had to pay a garage £35 to do it as the bolts were seized on. And have also flyeyed my rear lights now. Which come with a certificate showing they are 100% legal.

Why. Just why? They look crap. What is the purpose of rear lights?
To be seen. To be seen at night, fog, in rain.
You say you fitted DLRs for "saftey", yet your reducing your light output on the rear? Just because something is legal, does not make it wise.
-
Rear lights... Not my cup of tea but that doesn't matter ;) They don't seem too bad from the pictures (Light output point of view) and I've certainly seen worse on chavvy Saxo's ;D
But you've got a N/S Brake Lamp out :y :y

I know re: the brake light, it isn't a bulb but a wiring fault. I am going to trace that nasty little wire down and sort it ;D

I assume that the Senator you had was a later car. If you compared the lights at the back of that with a car a little older you'll find that around half of your lights were painted black with a series of black lines to give the same darkening effect of car-nut's rear lights (Manta Bs had the same lines on their rear lights) . The brighter/lighter tail lights of a facelift car is another negative for me compared with a preface lift car.
-
Don't forget to tell your insurance company about the modifications or you won't be insured. :o :o :o
I sincerely hope you are never rear-ended due to somebody in bright sunlight not seeing brake lights as IMH Experience when the sun is directly in your eyes it is difficult to see brake lights at the best of times. Several OOF member have had their pride and joy Omegas written off is the last few weeks and I would hate this to happen to your pride and joy, where you are obviously lavishing much pride, care and attention on it. The Omega gene pool is shrinking and every write-off and breaker is a sad loss from this. :(
-
Utter shyte in the dark and peesing rain. But then no surprises there ::)
Each to their own I guess :-\ Though I'd rather not be behind such things, there is better reflection from the paintwork than the lenses. :-X

Given the light fault has been known about for a while (i recall a thread a few weeks back), would it not be better to consider fixing the faults that make the car unroadworthy, before making the lights even harder to see?
No issues with the chav factor, as long as they don't reduce light output, and the car remains ade and legal, but very seriously must question your priorities ???
-
each to their own personally looks like a whole load of work to make the back end of the car look cr@p but its your car ruin it as you please :y
-
i think it looks quite cool actually 8)
-
Looks nice, if it is legal and if you like keep on, it's your car :y
-
It's so sad to read this thread. We all have different interpretations of our Omegas but at the end of the day we are all enthusiasts for an ageing, discontinued car that we all share a passion for. Some of us are traditionalists and wouldn't dream of changing anything from the day the car rolled off the production line. Others like to completely change the character and design (who can forget Thomas the Tank Engine)??? ;D
Then there are those in between, a category into which many, many OOF members fall. Including me. I'm no 'chav' but I like my badgeless grill and my 'eyebrows 8)'. Car Nut has contributed to this forum by telling us about the pride he has in his car and has shared some of the modifications he has done. You may not agree with them. You may not like them. That's fine, I perfectly respect your rights and opinions. But it saddens me greatly when some keyboard warriors choose to slag another member off in the way that this lad has been treated in this thread. I'm surprised he hasn't cleared off already. Clearly he hasn't and he has responded (with a fair amount of dignity and restraint) and fair play to him.
I like people to be different and do things differently. It makes the world interesting, so let's live and let live eh? :)

It's so sad to read this thread. We all have different interpretations of our Omegas but at the end of the day we are all enthusiasts for an ageing, discontinued car that we all share a passion for. Some of us are traditionalists and wouldn't dream of changing anything from the day the car rolled off the production line. Others like to completely change the character and design (who can forget Thomas the Tank Engine)??? ;D

Discussion and debate are good and are what the forum is all about. There will always be difference of opinions, which generally makes for an interesting read. :y
I disagree with you Millwall, in that no-ones been slagged off. In my book being called stupid and an idiot is pretty insulting, and therefore you're being slagged off.... ???
Car-nut took the time and effort to share his light thing with us, and I applude him for not descending to the same levels...... :y

As you are all acting like schoolchildren, I have to lock :(
