Thanks to OOF I was able to change dodgy regulator.
It all happened like this: Red "battery" light came on while driving. Checked charging voltage only 0.5V over battery voltage. Searched OOF & found alternator removal guides.
Note - removed airbox (as well as bagpipes) to give me elbow room to get my hand around back of alternator.
Got replacement regulator off the shelf from Vehicle Electrics in Birmingham (they are also on Ebay). Refitted alternator.
Note - Pushed pencil-sized telescopic magnetic retriever-thing through upper fixing holes & used it to guide the bolt through that was coming in from the back. With a bit of wiggling.
Started up - 15V charging. Hooray!
So big thanks to OOF for the guides.

If you think your notes make the job easier, PM Jimbob to update the guides :y

15V is too high isn't it? :-\

Hoping he read to nearest volt ;)

A little yes,should max out at 14.3 to 14.4 V

Found DMM & measured charging voltage at 14.26v. So that's OK then.
The "15v" reading was on a low-cost analogue meter that I keep in the mechanical toolbox.
