Whatever your position on the existence of Apple, respect is due to the man and he will be much missed i feel.... he'd earned a break, but helluva way to take it....
Farewell Mr Jobs, thanks for the gizmos , entertainment, and the elegance and push you brought to the tech world in all your enterprises.

That was incredibly quick :(
-
Very sad :(
Love or hate his products, he made a massive impact.
-
Very sad at such a young age.
I love apple got the pc , phone, pad, pod its great stuff :y
-
To be honest, he didn't look too well when he was on tv announcing his retirement.....
He has certainly left a legacy though.
-
Aye - as Max says, whatever you think about the current Apple products (yes, yes, we know, TB ;)) without people like Jobs it's entirely possible the 'home computer' revolution might never have happened (I'm thinking of folks like Sir Clive Sinclair et al, there, too)..

RIP Steve, you brought us many gadgets we didnt need :'(

Every industry needs people capable of pushing through alternative ideas in order to make progress. For that, he has to be applauded.
Remember, he's had some dogs as well - NeXTstep for example. And Lisa - technically brilliant (in its time), if a tad sluggish, but an utter commericial flop.
I suspect he will be remembered for the last 5 or 6 years - the iDevices. Traditional computers and laptops, crApple haven't really made inroads into, despite all Microsofts failures, but gayPod/Pad/Phone were/are revolutionary (in that they worked and were usable at launch).

He did something right, at one point Apple had more cash reserves that the US Government! :o

I think even I have more cash reserves than the US Government - my biggest debt is fairly modest, and is too the Woolwich Barclays ;D

as i recall, NeXTstep laid the groundwork for OSX.... and then WebObjects, which turns out to have been rather useful for Apple (Apple Store, itunes Store, and Mobile me all relied on it) so , not a complete waste,...
he's been responsible for pretty much everything since the iMac G3, it's rather more than 5-6 years.... 15 years more like.... and i would say he WILL be remembered for that other stuff like original iMac, clamshell iBook, and so on....

I know, more or less, what he's responsible for. My point is that he will be remembered for the iPod onwards ;)
The Macs are niche products, always have been, likely to always will be.

A phone that works...it's all anybody wants. I think Nokia where quite helpful to Mr jobs in a way.
If it wasn't for Nokia, I would never have bought an iPhone or then an iPad. I was given an iPod once. It was ok, but I would never have bought one myself.
Rip Mr Jobs, let's hope they burry the flash ban with him.

But what was it you said about people wanting things that work? ::)
I reckon he did well to survive pancreatic cancer that long. Announced in 2004. 56 is no age to die, though. :(

...yes any flash based web site working would be nice. Or the complete Internet, instead of 2/3rds of it. :(

I almost agree with the policy though, they are trying to push HTML5 which will leave it up to the device/browser to render, not rely on Adobe.
iPad it would be useful, given its target market. But have to remember Flash is generally very data hungry, just take a look at that link millwall posted a while ago, took fair bit of time to load even on a decent internet connection.
Unless your on very strong 3G signal or WiFi you going to struggle to use flash content on a phone

.. and unstable IME.

...may well be, I wouldn't know on this device. ;D
I might like to see how unstable it is for my self, like every one else. :(

And pretty much considered industry standard so required........

Yup, agreed :y
That said, in 18months of being a homo using a gayPhone, I can honestly say I don't think I've ever missed Flash :-\

A greater loss (IMHO) to the world of Computer Science; Dennis Ritchie died yesterday, co-inventor of the C programming language (alongside Brian Kernighan) and one of the central figures in the creation of Unix: http://boingboing.net/2011/10/12/dennis-ritchie-1941-2011-computer-scientist-unix-co-creator-c-co-inventor.html

Yes, indeed :( I wonder how many lines of C have been written worldwide?

I heard this as well :( :(

No idea, but I've written a few 100,000 of them. I remember using the Kernighan and Richie reference book on C programming to learn the language.
Apple Mac is about 5% of PC market, but they reckon that with the iPad this will increase to 12% this year. Microsoft's market share is being steadily eroded where tablet computers and smart phones are gaining market share.
