It seems I don’t have an alarm fitted. :'(
I read somewhere on these forums to test the alarm is to arm it with window open, wait a minute and wave your arms inside and it should set it off. I did that like a demented idiot and nothing happened.
Took it to the garage for them to test, they tell me it hasn’t got one. Said it would cost a couple of hundred quid to fit one, told them I would think about it.
Had a look on the web and phoned someone who specialises in alarms, they tell me they can’t fit one because Vauxhall fits them as standard and I would have to take it to a Vauxhall dealer that fits them.
Question is, who do I believe, the garage or the specialist? :-\

have you got sensors on B posts inside?.
when you lock doors after 1min or 2mins dose the red led flash on dash board?
Have not heard of any car as standard these days with out an alarm. could under stand if was 1990 year but most was standard by 93-94.
some times the sensors on B post are turnd off ie if have dogs or leave children in car. but if you press lock on remote twice it turns them back on.

B post ultra-sonic alarm sensors by default are always on unless you turn them off each time with the button on the dash with the man running away from ))) the fob has sod all to do with the interior sensors.

I'll try and help and sure will be corrected by more experienced on here if required :y
Leave rear drivers side window open & lock doors with fob (dont dead lock) - indicators should flash
Wait for red running man light to flash on dash
put arm in through open window and alarm should go off -
indicators will flash as hazards if alarm tripped
Alarm sounder should operate
car horn should also operate as well (i think)
if nothing happens then unlock rear door by pulling up tab through window and open the door
this should also enable the alarm as above
If hazard indicators flash and no sound it could be faulty sounder which could have been disconnected by previous owner
If no (hazard) indicator flash at any time or sounder/horn it could be a faulty or disconnected (or even fused) alarm unit.
Dont know location of alarm unit or fuse but bet there is info on here somewhere/someone

Might be an idea to check under the drivers side of the scuttle panel (under the wipers) to check if both alarm sounders (horns) are present and plugged connected. ;)

most people disconnect the power sounder which is under the drivers side scuttle (black box) due to acid from internal batteries leaking and can cause a fire :(
but next to the power sounder (black box) is a normal horn also under the scuttle which should sound if connected,this may be faulty if not sounding??? :-\

Some people disconnect their power sounder, some people repair it for under a tenner or replace it for fifty quid or so and thus keep their alarm complete and their insurers happy.
However we can ignore the power sounder for the purposes of this thread because it shouldn't be going off anyway. Although, as Albs says, if you've got one, you definitely have an alarm.

Some of you are talking about the running man / alarm button, the place where it should be on mine is just blank. No movement at all with the button. I can see it on the manual (same one as I got), which is confusing as in pic below.

I am out tomorrow so I will print out the other suggestions and go through them Monday.
If I have to have an alarm fitted is it only Vauxhalls that can do it?

If there's no factory alarm, then any one could fit A N Other alarm, although no one seems very interested in a car with its alarm siren going off these days. If it was me, I'd just stick with the OE immobiliser (ie chip in the key) which although obvioulsy does nothing to stop someone from getting in the car, it'll stop them from driving off. :y

That is so true, I have a train station at the bottom of the road, people park-up put alarm on and off to work by train. Some alarms goes off when a car goes by with a deep sounding exhaust, no one takes any notice because there alarms are going off too regular.
Yep, I thought about not bothering considering I can’t always park near where I live, the alarm would not always be within earshot.

Stan, the way I check when buying a car is to pop the bonnet, lock the car and then open the bonnet. If the alarm dont go off, it aint working properly or hasn't got one!

to be honest, when I saw the asking price £500.00 with only 65k on the clock I nearly snatched his arm off. OK, the M.O,T was going to run out in a couple of days but now that's sorted and passed, I expected a few other problems, but nothing major so far.
Only got two other things to sort out, airbag light and emissions light then I'll have a nice little motor. :)

Are you saying the button is different? If so I would guess someone has swapped it as I think that it is standard. Both the power sounder and alarm horn fail on these cars, I have had issues with both mine. Most of us remove the powersounder due battery failure/fire problems. The alarm horn can be replaced with an ordinary horn, not so loud but same connection and mounting and does the job.
