2008 Bike for 600 quid :o :o
With the loooming prospect of work over the pond, considering learning to ride a bike. With a bike i can have my own transport times i come back.
Place here offers CBT for £99, seen them go up and down my road :)
Any suggestions for a good bike for starters?

cracking price..... :y :y :y

Bit big for a learner.

Bit big for a learner.
:o :o :o
I learned on a Suzuki GS1000 (not legally of course) & took my test on Suzuki 125
Too big. Pah

Remember CBT lasts 3yrs only. You need to take the direct access (and take test on 500+ bike) for a permenent licence.
125s probably a bit scary round here, due to fast roads - most current 125s bottom out around 60 ish.
If you want to scare yourself witless, fancy my ZX-10?

Think thats a bit on the large side for me ;D
Seriously though next month i am seriously thinking of doing a CBT (3 year limit is not an issue)
I was thinking the same about a 125, flat out i can get 60... which should really be a cruise speed!
CBT limits me to 125cc i think? or a certain bhp?
Cause i heard you can get a big bike, and then just limit them with a chip?

I used to own a 100cc with a GENUINE maximum of 80mph. Yes it was tuned and I started with the quickest - early GP100 disc brake model

All modern ones are 4 strokes (and significantly more reliable without weekly work ;D). 60mph is about the limit.

irrelevent, coz with the power available, will still only do 60 flat out. Actually, probably less due to extra weight.

No fun then. I liked my old 100 it was a good first bike

Nody wants 2 strokes, too high maintenence.

I can't see a 100cc bike keeping up with a 250cc.
Its like 2.5 Omega Vs 3.0....
3.0 will just walk away!

Depends on the make / 4 sroke or 2. I have a 2.5 car that no 3.0l Omega will keep up with, so you cant always compare direct engine size. :)

A good tuned, well running 100cc may beat a poorly running 250cc in the same way a good 2.5 can outrun a not-so-good 3.0....

I took my test on a borrowed KH250 in Nov 80 ( I intended to get it insured ..Honest :-[) In the hour or so before my test that I had to practice in, I very nearly took a dive over the bars as I knocked the gears down 2 as I approached a roundabout :o!!! My GT250 had 6 gears & was 2 stroke - a slightly different riding style!

Yes, my first was 2 stroke, I was in for a shock with engine braking when I got my first 4 stroke...

go direct access like tb says.if you go cbt/125 route you will regret it once the novelty has worn off (about a fortnight).i did my direct access on a cb500,like the one ten minutes from you and in my opinion it would be a perfect starter bike for a restricted budget.just like a car the throttle works both ways, but at least there is a little bit of potential performance available with the cb500 as you gain confidence. this time next year you will probably want an R1. :y
-
My first bike was a Honda SS50, I was the first year of 50's at 16. If I had been a year older I could have had a 250cc at 16 years.
Honda CB250 used to get me from Gosport to Durham most weekends over the Winter of 73 - 74 used to stop every 50 miles to warm up, Happy days :) :) :)

You do these sort of things when you are a Kid.
Warm Car now, though am looking for a bike.
Gospot to Durham for the Weekend, too bl**dy far, even in a Car, to do it regularly, must be an age thing. :D :D :D

Been there .... done that. I used to do loads of miles backwards & forwards from Rosyth to Bury or from Pompey to Bury & back in a week end. My 'best' time from Pompey Hard to H21's stomping ground was 6 & 1/2 hours in a hired Sierra Saphire. 0400 in Pompey ... 1030 in Rosyth ::) ::) ::)

Way way waaaay before my time! ;) :y
It's amazing how things go round. My lad is at the same shore establishment as Marie - HMS Sultan - learning how to be a WAFU Wet And *ery Useless. My best mate's (another ex Tiff) son has also been to the carears office & hopes to sign on in June/July.
In the 20 yrs since I've been in Civvy St things seem to have changed.... a lot.

:)My first bike was a Fizzy, then a Fantic Cabellero (or Frantics as we called 'em) then a DT175, then a new RD250DX (pre LC) then a KH400, craking bike, 2 stroke triple but the centre pot took a while to cut in when cold, usually on a roundabout with the throttle wide open then it'd scream & launch you whichever way you were facing @ the time. Woke me up in the mornings!!! Setting up 3 sets of points was no fun but to this day i love KH's. More recently had a 600 Bandit for a while, tried a mates 1200 but hard to keep the front down!!! Had a go on a gixer & a 900 'Blade, fast as break but i don't like the riding position of sportbikes. Also, never took a test so best left as happy memories. I'd love another KH though!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Top end 250s were a bit quicker - they were Superdreams and an old Yamaha, my 100 was a LOT lighter and about 11bhp less, up to about 50 or 60 nothing in it
-
Thinking about it the wet dreams were not that quick but were well styled

sooooo
To bring this back on track, CB500 should be good? :)
-
one youve done you CBT (lasts for 2 years) and then DAS.
Did my DAS 5 years ago now, and after saving up the pennys got me my ZX6R :)
-
cb500`s are a good bike they`ve been around ages so theres plenty of spares and the engines are bullet proof just stay away from ex despatchers hacks and ex bike trainers(not well maintained) you might want to look at the kwacka er 500`s as well and the yamaha fazers..if it was me though i`d be looking at maybe a shaft driven bike like a gt550 or honda 650 deauville but thats just the despatcher in me coming out..if your gonna do motorway miles try for a bike with a fairing makes commuting a bit more easy espec on the neck muscles..try picking the used bike guide up from the news agents they have more than enough info on wot to look out for when buying and take someone knowledgeable bout bikes with ya dont let shiny bike syndrome catch ya out :P good luck with it tunnie.. :y

sooooo

Any of the 500cc twins are good - Kawasaki ER-5, Honda CB500 or Suzuki GS500. The Kawasaki is probably easiest to ride, and has the lowest seat (not so much of an issue for you), and will be cheapest. You have to keep clean, as the finish isn't that great. I used to frequently do 130m rund trip for work on my ER-5 - wouldn't want to go much further as when I arrived (65m) my arse was getting to the point of numbness. CB500 more comfortable imho, but more expensive, but everyone has different views of comfort.
Also, if you want a shade more power, the SV-650 V-twin is a good first 'big bike', very forgiving.
Beyond that, the Hornet and Fazer 600cc - this are in effect an unfaired, detuned versions of the respective 600cc sports bikes. No disrespect Tunnie, but you may want to wait a while before going to this level, based on my knowledge of your capabilities :)
-
And as I said, if you want to go pillion on the ZX-10, just let me know. And bring your own nappies ;D (seriously, I would be slow and cautious with you on the back). Also, if you want to come for a drive with my giving commetry of whats going through my head with my 'biker head' on, thats fine - you need to start being far more alert than most of us are in the car :y
-
got me looking at bikes now..an i`ve just seen this brings back a load of memories up and down the m40... ;D ;D

yes.......forget cbt,do direct access,if cb500 in decent nick and budget a bit tight then it would do fine for starters :y

I have enjoyed a biking career over the years:
Yamaha FS1E
Honda CB125T (incredible-revs!)
Honda Superdream (very-bland!)
Honda Seely/750 (nice-looker!)
Kawasaki Z1300 (way-too heavy)
Ducati 900SS (loved the engineering, but rubbish electrics!)
Guzzi Le Mans (lovely!)
Guzzi Spada (gorgeous!)
I miss it (only) on lovely, sunny-days; but here in North Wales it seems every weekend some (several, on one day recently) bikers die....I did my I.A.M course back in the 80`s but I think biking`s just too dangerous for me to enjoy now. :'(
-
cant be as dangerous as flying a plane you built yourself debs ;D,seriously though i reckon you should buy another ducati the electrics are really good now,it just so happens that i have one for sale ;D ;D ;D

Funny to say but I never feel worried flying my homebuilt `plane: but once or twice near the end of my biking career (as the result of other motorists behaviour) I felt genuine fear for my life; `surely time to give-up; I thought!
But, sometimes, when a Guzzi or Duke pulls alongside my car at the lights; I get those 'pangs' again. ;)
-
i gave up for years when the kids were young, then the pangs got irresistible,it must be in the blood ;)
-
I go to fast on bikes I used to commute Gloucester Worcester on a 600 and use to take 20 minutes.
BTW I remember the Honda CB125T quite well - had a good rae with one once and he was very shocked at getting beaten by a 100

The thing about flying is that you can give all the other idiots a really wide berth.
If you see them first. ::)

Tunnie, if you can afford it, do the DAS course. You will hate being restricted once you get used to riding.
The suggestions of bikes are good but finding a plastic maggot (CB500) that has not been used as a dispatch bike will be a challenge!
Take up TB on his offer. It will be a real eye opener, and notice his road positioning, braking and all round awareness will be completely different to driving. Drivers would be so much better if they had to ride a bike for a year before they could drive!

They all use standard PMR446 bike to bike radios - often the students can only hear.

CBT - Compolusry Bike Training.
You must take this to be allowed on to ride a motorbike, under 21 i think CBT only lets you up to 125cc, and you must have L plates
Its valid for 3 years. you must take the propper test or it expires
CBT is basically a course of theory and practical, you learn the controls, road basics, you go around in a car park for a bit going though cones, then its onto the road.
-

Martin, I think you have what they call 'Grand-Father Rights' (as do I) if you passed your 'full' M/C test before the CBT legislation was introduced; the privileges of your existing 'full' M/C license are unchanged (no requirement for training, power/CC restrictions or further tests).
-
Unless you have the old Part 2 bike test, you must have:
CBT - up to 125 (50 if 16), need to have L plates. Valid for 3 yrs. Once expired, you need to retake (pretty much formality to 'pass' CBT).
Bike test - if taken on a 500cc and you are over a certain age (21?) you can ride anything. If taken on smaller, or you're younger, there are restrictions.
-
Unless you have the old Part 2 bike test....
I passed my 'full' M/C test back in 1978 is that what you mean by "Part 2"?

Oh happy days. :D :D :D

I passed my test in 1982 on a 1973 Lambretta 150 just before the two part test arrived.

Oh happy days. :D :D :D
Gosh! `looking back, those tests were farsical; my test was stopped early because a dog ran out and bit my boot, I stopped (of course) and the examiner walked up and said I`d reacted perfectly and I`d passed!.....only gone round the block once and that was it!
Later, I did however do the Police 'Roadcraft' course (in those days they offered it to 'Jill-public' in Cheshire) and then later I did the I.A.M M/C course/test......`Happy days indeed! :y

The only reason I took my test was I had to ride through Frodsham which was a biker town on my way to work between Chester and Manchester and my scooter would only do about 55mph flat out but the tuned Fizzies could easily catch me so I passed my test and by-passed Frodsham on the M56 ;D
