Post by: amba on 12 October 2011, 23:14:00
Anybody got a link to a decent internet speed checker. :y

Virgin Broadband service I normally have of 20meg seems to be on a go slow for the last few days and emails take ages to download.Have done all the normal stuff..rebooted modem etc but want to double check speed before I do battle with Virgin Media. ;D

I'm glad it's not just me.. my Virgin connection used to be a nice steady 50Mbps, these days it'll drop down to <1Mbps in the evenings.. which is taking the pee a tad considering the price.

Shame their support system is about as useful as a one legged man at an arse-kicking contest.

exactly the reason i left virgin and went to plusnet  not had any problems since and their customer service is excellent :y

If I was going back to ADSL it'd be with Zen - it'd cost me a fortune for the service I'd want, but, they have support second to none IMHO (I was with them for years previously).

But around here ADSL offers pitiful speeds all the time, rather than pitiful speeds at peak hours from Virgin.. ;D

Well spoke to Virgin Media this morning >:(

They said there were no faults registered in my area so would send a test down the line :o :o :o to see what was happeneing.Young guy said there appeared to be a fault as it was slow...which is what I told them in the first place ;D ;D ;D..anyway the best they can offer is a visit from an engineer next Tuesday some time between 8.00 and 12.00 so they will be getting a claim for a wasted morning now.

It is so slow I can,t even download the 2 sites given by Milwall to check out the speed....we pay for 20 and recon at the moment we are slower than the old dial up system. :-[

Agree, Zen are the best provider out there. Probably the most expensive as well ;D

OOF runs from a Zen ADSL circuit ::)

Depends what you think you are getting.

Clearly you are on a ADSL2 service, so not brilliant, but it is peak time, if you have a crappy ISP

Well I have just managed to get the test link to work so here is the results :-X.....but haven,t a clue what it all means :D :D :D

All I know is it is rather slow even compared to normal and we pay for a 20 meg service.

Date             time              Download Speed              Upload Speed

13/10/2011    20.18           192Kbps (24KB/s )           1173Kbps (147 KB/s)

Is that as bad as it seems ?

Just done it again and figures are :

    Download Speed                     Upload Speed
   201Kbps(25.1 KB/s )                 336 Kbps (42KB/s)

Assume it is worse than last reading  :-X :-X :-X

Quick Q Amba, do you know what your line stats are?

Try going to http://192.168.100.1 (http://192.168.100.1) - if the page appears, click on 'Downstream' and tell us what the Power Level(s) are and the Uncorrectable & Correctable codewords are?

And I thought mine was bad..
Download Speed   Upload Speed
13579 kbps (1.7MB/s)   4797 kbps (600kB/s)

I feel much better now ;) athough I'm paying for 50Mbps so I'm still getting rather shafted.

Another thumbs-up for Zen here. Yes, it's not the cheapest service, but it just works.

Bar one hickup when the service was first established (BT problem) I have never found my connection down nor noticed any lack in speed.

With 20Mb Virgin I'm assuming the OP is on Cable .. and that link should work on any of the cable modems, apart from the newest ones they're shipping (I was also guessing the OP didn't have his line installed in the last 6 months ;))

Though I've noticed mine quits responding to it after a while and a reboot of the modem & router brings it back to life - never did bother figuring out if that's my router losing it's routing table or the modem quitting responding to that address..

Ok mate long post on vm first q are you a heavy user download movie files or online gamerer ie wow if so could be being capped common issue for high users on vm another thing to check is your power levels at modem vm states upload and download should be between -15 db and +15 db in my experience it needs to be between 0 db and +6 db and your snr levels need to be around 40 ish (sorry can't rember exact fig for this higher or lower is bad (snr is noise on line ie open ends ) ok complicated part open internet explorer in address bar type 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.100.1 to log in to vm modem don't worry not changing settings now user name should be admin password is either left blank or password if pm me what modem u have a can give exact instruction once in all your looking for is upstream power lvl and downstream power lvl plus snr value don't be fobbed by engineer you need to get in region of values qouted hope this helps

here is the exsact method for checking modem mate
Inside the modem are various web pages that contain useful information about your connection.  When reporting a connection fault it may be useful to include some of the information found within these pages.  To view them open up your web browser and type 192.168.100.1 into the address bar and press Enter.

The main information the Support team are interested in are the Downstream Power Level/Levels, Upstream Power Level and Downstream SNR (called RxMER on some modems).  Depending on the model of modem you have this information will either be located in the ‘Signal’ page or the ‘Downstream’ and ‘Upstream’ pages.

Please note some modems will require you to log in before you can view these pages.  The login details for both the username and password is root.

Virgin Media Hub

Our new hub has this information in a slightly different place. You'll need to got to this link http://192.168.0.1 and use the username: admin and the default password: changeme. Then click on the 'Connection' link that's part of the 'Maintenance' section for the information you'll need.
