Good morning
I dug out my winter tyres at the weekend to find them all flat.
The tyres are mounted on the original alloy wheels which are getting a bit corroded. Part of the problem seems to be that the rims were originally fitted with clip on balance weights and you can see a bit of corrosion at the site of these.
Every year I seem to spend £15-20 per corner to have someone remove the tyre, give the rim a scrub with a wire brush, and then re-assemble.
It last OK for the season and then next year the same performance!
Can anyone suggest a longer lasting and cheaper solution to this problem?
I know that a lot of cars are now fitted with an aerosol can instead of a spare wheel to inflate and seal the tyre to keep you going. Would something like that be a solution to this leakage problem?

I wouldn't recommend the aerosol type sealant as it tends to render the tyre useless for the future.
You could have the tyres re-seated using rim sealer, which is a paint on rubbery compound, or possibly one of the tyre slime type preventative goo that you put in :-\

??? somethings wrong there I have 2 sets of winter wheels/tires.. never need that.. and I rarely need increase pressure!
when you remove the tire please clean the inner sides of wheels by sanding (240/320) so its completely and in touch with the tire..

Remove the tyres
Sand down the alloy
Wipe it clean with some brake cleaner
Reseal the alloy with laqaur
When dry, refit the tyres using rim sealer :y :y

I think the problem is that the rim is corroding, and that the tyre fitter simply scrubs away the white, powdery deposits and then refits the tyre. He did put something on which I took to be a sealant of some sort but it seems to have been ineffective.
If need be I'll have the tyres demounted, do a proper job with wire brush, wet or dry and rim sealer and then have the tyres remounted. The only problem I see is that if the rim starts corroding under the rim sealer, will I be doing the job again next year?
Can you suggest a good rim sealer?
I've seen tyre slime advertised for mountain bikes. Is there something on the market that I can put in through the valve and then inflate and save myself £80-00?
I think the winter tyres will last the remaining life of the car so I'm not too worried about messing up the tyres or rims.

If you get rid of the corrosion then lacuaer it, it will seal up :y
If you just rub away the corrosion, it will come back under the sealent and leak again ;)

Remove the tyres yourself (easy enough to do,plenty of howto vids on youtube) prepare rims as advised above,then refit them yourself. Save quite a few ££.
I almost always fit my own tyres.Most tyre fitters charge good money to wreck your wheels and tighten the nuts to around 5 times the recommended setting.

I used some tyre seal / anti puncture seal from ideal world and never could get the wheels balanced. I agree the best thing would be to clean off corrosion, etch prime, paint then laquer.

Only one way will solve the problem. Take em off, use a lot of elbow grease and abrasives to remove the grott, re-prime and then give the end result a good few coats of a two pack varnish.
Only way I know that will definitely work....
Even after that you might have to use a rim sealant when the tyres are refitted.
Don't forget to give the tyre beads a good clean too.......... :y

I've had the same problem with mine, tried Slime to no avail. I think centrifugal force takes the stuff to the tread area and away from the beads. Tyres off, wire brush thoroughly & a couple of coats of Hammerite cured mine.
