Title: Tyres
Post by: Mad Dog on 17 October 2011, 21:14:04
I have aquired a set of MV6 17inch wheels for my 2.6 CDX saloon and need tyres. What would be the recommended make of tyres in 235/45/17

really quite pointless question really, going to get a huge variation in answers. Might help if you say what kind of miles you do, what your looking for, wear rate, grip? Wet grip? Snow? Noise? Budget?

Depends on your budget/driving style/expectations etc. ;)

Whilst I agree that everyone has their budget, there are tyre & cheap tyres. The ally rims I have on my car came second hand & had two Events & 2 'other' cheap tyres  they were crap. I have 4 branded tyres on now (that The Boy doesn't really like - but hey ho!  ;)) and the difference is like chalk & cheese.

See, I don't agree with the lethal cheap ditchfinders I currently have on my Elite ;D

I really like my Sport Maxx TT on the Bullet, but really don't like the wear rate ::)

..............................What would be the recommended make of tyres in 235/45/17

As said, opinions will vary greatly. I've tried Michelin Pilot Sports (which were original fit from new) Continental SC2/3 and currently on Toyo T1R's. I only tend to press on in a straight line now but need to know that I can stop when I need to. As a straightliner my idea of a decent tyre is when you brake really hard in the wet and the contents of the back seat hit you on the head.  ;D ;D

Currently looking at replacing the Toyo's with Goodyear F1's of some description but have no experience of these. Most brand names in this size are over £100 each.

Alan

I bought mine when it was ten months old (Vauxhall management vehicle) so I've only lost about £23,000 so far.  :o :o  That's pretty good by my standards.  ;D ;D Ah well, easy come easy go as they say.  :y

When asking for tyre recomendations, really need to say what your prioritys are, and what you call "a good tyre"

Ie to some, a good tyre is the cheapest possible. To others performance and grip levels are key,but will be expensive. If you see what i mean... :)

My newest car was a 24v Senator for which I paid c£8k IIRC but had 114000 miles on it. There's no way I could, nor want to afford any car I fancied if it was new or anything like new.  ;) ;) ;)

I use Admiral's and they work well for me. I ain't a slowcoach, steady grandaddy driver either  ;).
Almost silent, great all weather grip, long life and a nice comforatble ride too.
Really good economical price of around 65 notes each delivered. What more could you ask for?
On second set now and have no intention of changing.  :y

Going by some I had on one of my previous Omegas, some level of grip would be nice ;D

Great grip is inversely proportional to long life. Thats where the compromise has to be made, if cost isn't a factor...

Hello mate,
When I had 17's I used Pirelli and Continentals. Can't fault them.

I'm going back to 17's in the Spring and shall be looking to put these on again.

I have also considered Potenzas and will give them a go if the others ain't available when I come to reboot my 17's

Not entirely fair, though. Some Falken customers are delighted with their purchases. :D

Compated to sc3, quite a noisy tyre ime. And not massively grippy given the price. But certainly not a bad tyre.

S001's? Blimey no! Never heard of 'em!

And judging by the You tube clips you posted am never likely to either!

No, I'm more a REO50A type of tyre buyer (if Potenzas were going to be bought, that is)

I'll exhaust my Continental/Pirelli fascination first................  ::)

I think the KU31s are a good tyre for the money. My biggest complaint is lack of feedback, in that they don't tell you when they are going to kill you.  Not taken KU31s through a cold snap yet either, so can't say how well they hang on in there when the temps plummet
