Title: Fitting your own tyres
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 18 October 2011, 12:16:41
I recently saw Albs posted in Gen Help that he fits his own tyres!  :y

I had no idea this is possible. What kit is needed and how is it done? Is it difficult, how long does it take?

The only tyres I've ever changed are pushbike ones  ;D :y

Personally I wouldn't... Balancing issues etc ::)

But Albs seems to be successful :y :y

You know how you use a spoon from the kitchen to fit a pushbike tyre?

You just need a really BIG spoon to fit a car tyre.

;D

Sorry, I'm sure someone will be along with a sensible answer in a minute..

Not an area I'd like to experiment with or cut corners to save a few pennies...

I had a very quick attempt to remove an Astra tyre from its rim the other week, not even an Omega's weight would break the bead from its seat.  ??? ;D ;D Took it to a local tyre shop.  :y

Well, you have to experiment to learn, on anything. So happy to experiment.

Agree about cutting corners tho. would never drive on one unless I was certain it was entirely safely and correctly done...

I was just going to say - most of the videos on YouTube involve driving a car over the tyre to break the bead (so it doesn't seem like you could ever re-use that tyre!), and to put it on again involve repeatedly levering the new tyre on to the wheel with a crowbar.. which seems like a great way to ruin your alloys.

Not to mention you then have to set fire to the tyre to get it to seat on the bead..

Must admit it sounds like a ballache.

Was just curious, having seen Albs has done it!

Maybe Albs will be a long in a bit to tell us all to stop being nancyboys and mount tyres the way real men do it  :D

bloody hard work without a hydraulic/pneumatic tyre press..

in my youth i worked as a tyre fitter in treadex tyre & exhaust, Banbury...

basically, the chances are that without the right tools,  you will knacker the rim, or the tyre, or both,

especially on low aspect ration tyres like we use on Omegas....   the whole point of the low aspect is to stiffen the sidewall, which makes the tyre much harder to remove or fit....

(and coincidentally improves handling ;)   )

never mind the whole issue of balancing.....       spinning the thing fast enough and measuring the wobble accurately enough is not trivial....

on old school 80% aspect ratio tyres, it's possible , indeed, even relatively easy to do it by hand using what amount to big tyre levers....

it gets harder the lower the ratio,  by the time you get to 60% you can forget ever doing it by hand..... and as for our 45% tyres on miggys...   not a chance, ever....

I fit my own - but I have got access to the proper machine tho.

it's become a necessity because of the amount of tyres I get through. Some months of the year I'll go through twenty or so

I've fitted split rim truck tyres in the past and if you don't get the rims sitting right as you inflate it, the results can be lethal...  ::)  I saw one go bang once when it wasn't done right and it sent the steel rim flying  :o :o It went with such force that it would have decapitated someone had they been in the way!!!  :o :o  We never did find the rim!!!  :-[ Very Scary!!!  :(

We fit all of our own tyres, both road and track ones.  But are lucky enough to have use of a proper tyre machine!!!
A friend of mine fits all his at the track with a sledge hammer and tyre levers!!!!  He not damaged one yet.  So it can be done with out a machine but I can't.......................If the tyre is no use then its very satisfying to use a grinder to remove the tyre but not really reccomended  :) :)

I think we really need to hear from the wise man of the East regarding this. :y

Hm, maybe Albs is using something like this along with a stand (or bead breaker machine, also available s/hand on eBay cheap): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/manual-tyre-machine-changer-bar-alloy-wheels-car-bike-/170712512217

Watch the video and he makes it look easy...

Nearly there Aaron.A length of wood, about 6 feet long and at least 3x3. Run length of wood from the ground up onto the tyre, just shy of the edge of the wheel.Drive a vehicle (bigger the better) up the wood to break the bead.Turn wheel over and repeat. Then lever off with tyre levers (use rim protectors).Lever new tyre on.No need to set  fire to anything.Just a good airline to reinflate and pop the bead out onto the rim again.I dont mind doing it as I do it at work (helps pass the time) using a Transit van.
Still need to get them balanced of course.Ive done my own bike tyres for years, and in the last couple of years have started doing my car tyres as well.

I'm presuming you don't re-use the tyres you take off that way? I mean, it wouldn't be so good for swapping winter tyres on & off rims.. I imagine driving over the side of the tyre does nasty things to the internal construction.

I suppose you could always invest in one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TYRE-FITTING-MACHINE-WALK-ROUND-MANUAL-H-D-FANTASTIC-KIT-/170704210408
