Title: Journey length: What's good for a car
Post by: I_want_an_Omega on 26 October 2011, 20:06:09
We all know that very short trips are not good for any car with constant cold starts etc.

What's the minimum length of commute that could be considered "healthy".

It certainly isn't 2 miles, but how about 5 or 10?

Comments please

I would say it is more down to the way it is driven in the first few miles while cold.
Condition and grade of engine / gearbox oil  :-\

I drive 5.2 miles to work in the morning. For the first mile I take it very easy and then drive normally. I have been doing this journey for many years with no vehicle problems that could be attached to it.

I do change the oil very regularly and self service on virtually everything. I have not even suffered from premature exhaust failure.

Car does less than 4000 miles per year aswell.
