Title: Should I use Halfords Autocentre for Diagnostic Check
Post by: Stan_2 on 28 October 2011, 20:39:25
Has anyone used Halfords Autocentre for a diagnostic check?

If so what did you think of them?

Or heard anything to put you off using them?

They charge £50 for a diagnostic check, is that reasonable?

halfords autocentres, formally nationwide autocentres,  will tempt you in with cheap quotes that grow massively once there. Avoid at all costs

Thanks for the replies, I was only going to use them because they were convenient, only about 4 miles away. I’ll forget about halfords now after what TB said.

Looks like I’ll have to wait for a bit until I can book it in at the stealers.

If I could do the paperclip check I’d make a right pigs ear of it, I'd be like Del's brother, Rodney, a right plonker ;D

The airbag light is on all of the time, that doesn’t bother me at all.

It’s the emissions light on 80% of the time that’s bugging me, I don’t know if I’m making things worse while driving it.

I like that, must try to remember it.  ;D

The paperclip trick is very easy!!  ;)  Even I can do it!!  :D :y  There's a 'how to' in the maintenance section.  Why not give it a try? It's free!!!  :y

There's also a list of codes somewhere here as well that will point you in the right direction or post up the codes and hopefully someone will tell you whats going on!!  ::)  8)

As has been said, try the paperclip test then post up the codes it flashes out. Nothing to lose and it could save you your £50.

Failing that, you could take a jaunt down the M3 and I'll take a look with the Tech 2. I'm often around the J4a area so we could meet up somewhere there.

I’ve just had a look at the paperclip link, thanks.

I’ll have a go at the paperclip test next week, I’m don’t feel very confident about getting the codes. I’ll have a go tho.

Thanks again everyone  :y

Halfords....by all means go there and then you give us all a laugh when they make a B of it. They are a shop for accesorries and not mechies. However you dress a monkey it is still a monkey.
Find an oofer living locally with the gear to do it or buy a code reader cos they are cheap enough unless you want the full Tech2 job.
I bought a code reader to save the cost of the dealer stealers and it performs as it should each time I plug it in.
The problem is I very rarely have any codes flash up! ;D

:y I know that but I have had personal experience with them before I knew DLK. In my view they rely too much on tech and not enough on practical hands on experience. I dare even go so far as to think of them as pretendy mechanics.
There again in desperate need its any port in a storm so the saying goes........ ;D

Unliklely a reader will work as it's a 2000 model, usually only 2001 onwards so would we be talking pedal trick in as it has an emmision light i.e facelift?

This is true of a large chunk of the motor repair industry, IMHO. A code reader is no use whatsoever to someone who doesn't know in detail how the system they are diagnosing works. They will assume that every fault code diagnoses a faulty component and so the process of replacing good parts at random begins...
