Title: Ungrateful kids
Post by: Terbs on 31 October 2011, 22:00:26
Been staying in Brackley for the weekend, and Grandson is all into this Halloween lark, so pumpkin is duly carved and put in the window. He goes off trick or treating with a strict code of practice. :y
Daughter has got a bucket load of sweets for those that call on us....half of Brackley must have knocked on the door...all very polite and say thankyou..........that is, until the sweets had been hit for six and some young girl about 7 or 8 tells my wife..'I don't like anything in there, haven't you got any more' :o
Wife says..'No, thats all we have got left now'......to which the girl says ' You should blow your pumpkin out then'
Talk about ungrateful.... her parents never said a word, so wife just shut the door >:(

Used to get 'em coming round in Slough when I lived there - when told I had no sweets I usually got "Got a fiver then?"..

I also distinctly remember the lot who came 'round two weeks early because "Well we're on holiday in Tenerife on the 31st. Got any now? Or money?"

And the lot whose father wanted to borrow a bottle opener so he could open the bottle of red wine he was clutching and drink it on his way 'round with them  :o

We're very fortunate that where we live the kids are generally polite. SWMBO normally makes biscuits and even the parents ask for some ::)

I had a go at scaring the kids this year.  The wife gets lots of American Candy over on her trips so we get lots of visitors.  I hide behind the door and as they ring the doorbell my hand comes shooting out of the letterbox and I shout "Whada you want?!"

It scares the parents too  ;D ;D

We get a good few round here, never had any problems and lots of thank yous, even from the older ones. I used to have a load of spooky stuff up and a speaker so I could scare the little darlings as they came up the drive.... :D :D :D  No time to do that today and now that Miss Vamps goes out not really much point, only had 1 little boy in tears tonight, he was scared of our big old fat soft lab who likes to join in answering the door... :D :D :D
Still got a few sweets left and Miss Vamps came in with loads of sweets and some money.... :y

Forgot to add in my OP, but when Daughter came out from work at Bicester Village, she was confronted by a women and a young girl about 5yrs old. 'Trick or treat' says the girl.......'Sorry, I haven't got anything on me' says my daughter.
'What about money', says the girl. 'Any loose change' says the mother  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( Daughter walked off.
She reckoned the accent of the mother was that of certain Tarmac Driveway installers, if you get my drift ;) not wishing to tar (excuse the pun) everybody with the same brush

We don't hold with Halloween, it's a dodgy American import so we just let them knock until they get sick and leave ;)

The Kingdoms very own Victor Meldrew here.....   >:(

If the kids (or adults) say 'trick or treat' at the door, I remind them that they are Scots and the proper term is Guising and was on the go loooong before the americanised version.

They earn their goodies up here rather than being more of the 'pay up or else' that kinda symbolises the U.S. culture.   ;D   :y

From wikipedia....

Guising

In Scotland and Ireland, "guising" — children going from house to house in disguise — is traditional, and a gift in the form of food, coins or "apples or nuts for the Halloween party" (in more recent times chocolate) is given out to the children dressed up in various costumes.[33][34] The tradition is called "guising" because of the disguises or costumes worn by the children.[35] In the West Mid Scots dialect, guising is known as "galoshans".[36] Among the earliest record of Guising at Halloween in Scotland is in 1895, where masqueraders in disguise carrying lanterns made out of scooped out turnips, visit homes to be rewarded with cakes, fruit and money.[2] Guising also involved going to wealthy homes, and in the 1920s, boys went guising at Halloween up to the affluent Thorntonhall, South Lanarkshire.[37] An account of guising in the 1950s in Ardrossan, North Ayrshire, records a child receiving 12 shillings and sixpence having knocked on doors throughout the neighborhood and performed.[31] There is a significant difference from the way the practice has developed in North America with the jocular threat. In Scotland and Ireland, the children are only supposed to receive treats if they perform for the households they go to. This normally takes the form of singing a song or reciting a joke or a funny poem which the child has memorized before setting out.[31] Occasionally a more talented child may do card tricks, play the mouth organ, or something even more impressive, but most children will earn plenty of treats even with something very simple. Often they won't even need to perform.[33] While going from door to door in disguise has remained popular among Scots and Irish at Halloween, saying "trick-or-treat" has become common.

My mate lives in a flat and his buzzer was going all night with kids buzzing his flat. He told them kindly to stop it, They didnt so he less than kindly told them a 2nd time, Weh Hey... They left! 15 mins later he had his car window smashed in this parking space. Bit coincidental but no proof if they did it. Wouldn't be surprised though now days.   ::)

So what was TB dressed as then?
Scrooge.

I spent last night sat in my chair repeatedly shouting "something Off" when they knock on the door (ignoring the sign and not taking the hint that the doorbell was disabled).

Always my fear where I used to live, as the MR2 sat outside the house - far too easy a target what with a soft top n'all.. fortunately it never happened.
