Title: Will my Lamba sensor be seized?
Post by: tunnie on 02 November 2011, 22:45:02
So I'm going to try & remove my failed lamba sensor, on my 3.2, some say it will be seized and need heat to loosen it. Others say it will be fine.

Thoughts?

Yep.

Best break out the big breaker bar and good crows foot socket.

Wait.. I forgot who I'm talking to for a moment there - best go to Halfords and buy a big breaker bar and good crows food socket. ;D (although they don't sell good crows foot sockets, sadly - I had to get mine online)

Good does not include the Clarke ones.
You need a hardened one if it's stubborn. If seized your in trouble regardless.

But I reckon it will come out cat in place. Mine was very easy to undo. Although it's done half the miles of Tunnies.

Given condition of the rest of the car, I'm hopeful. It's had a blast of plus gas, will attempt in morning before MOT!

To be fair I've only failed to get two O2 sensors out - one was cross threaded at the factory, and wouldn't come out even with a scaffold bar on it, and the other came out but unthreaded the threaded boss with it and we couldn't get that off the sensor once it came out..

My crowsfoot socket looks rather like this one, though if memory serves it isn't a bi-hex: http://image.snapon.com/international/pdf/ANM21etc.pdf

I dislike the 'deep' O2 sensor sockets (the ones that threaten to crush the wire at the top) as they tend to splay open when you put big torque on them) .. damned if I can remember where my socket came from, though :(

Ive usually found they come out quite easily, but I have heard some horror stories. ;)

I forgot to say - the first one that failed to come out for me.. the car only had 4,000 miles on it and was less than a year old..

But yeah, other than that.. a bit of brute force usually does it :y

Ime there isn't room for a lambda socket. Open ended spanner worked.

I'll be using a spanner, I borrowed one of fatties Halfords Advance, my set only goes to 19mm

Open ended spanner seems like a swift route to unhappiness, but.. that's just me :)

C'mon tunnie, the suspense is killing me... :)

Well the 'd' already fell out of it, so I reckon the whole thing will virtually drop out.

No wait, the Tunnie factor...

...you'll pee about for hours with inappropriate tools, posting twenty times on here in between efforts.   :-*

Yes. Wishbones sorted.

Well it's down for it's MOT, the lamba.......... was the new one!!!

Old one came out easy, plus gas last night plus must have done trick. One little grunt and it was off. Took all of 15mins!

Took it for an Italian tune up, everything looks ok. Got a feeling it will fail on discs, they did not clean up as much as I would have hoped.

Sounding a bit tappety at the moment, my 2.2 sounds smoother  :o

What's the oil history?

Maybe worth a few short changes?

My 3.2 is due MOT in a couple of weeks :(

One little grunt and

As you get older you'll find that turns into "One little grunt .. and a fart" and when much older, you have to be careful that fart doesn't turn into a... ;D

Oil is over a year old, as it's been stood and sorn for some time. So really does need a change!

Yeah, if the Nissan can pass an MOT on discs that have stood for 8 years and only had a half mile scrub on the way there, I'm sure this Omega can!

Ohh that's good then. 90% of the fronts are nice and shinny and clean. It stops fine, think the pads need a clean. Some parts are not as clean as it should be

I'm not so sure on that front... I preferred (because I now have full trade policy ;)) to ring my insurer and ask them to put it on temp cover... Never had a problem and the most I've had to pay is a £25 Admin fee for a weeks cover :y
