Title: plumbers rates
Post by: pscocoa on 02 November 2011, 22:57:30
what is approx plumbers charge rate these days - I have stopped doing DIY these days and my daughter needs a leaking shower cubicle replaced (tray and screens), retiling etc and also change ordinary shower head for Triton electric - £750 labour quoted. Might need floor sorting where leak over long period has done some damage.

dunno, but i know a bloke who does good bathroom work,  from just a shower base, to a full refit and tile,  where's the daughter based??  he's based out near the millenium dome / O2

but covers all of london and most of the south east ..

Gary Hudson

typically about £150 a day + materials i think....  (possibly + Vat)

oh, seven, nein, severn, tree, - Hate, tree, severn, five, double seven.

(go on bots,  crawl-collect that number if you can... )

(he's also a bloody good masseuse, and model maker for film work,  and occasionally works for me on commercial recording studio builds where i need extra craftsmen , and not cheap assed monkeys.  )

To remove existing shower tray and screens ,removal of existing wall tiles and making good the wall surface for retiling ,examination of wall ,floor and existing drains for defects , installation of new thermostatic power shower to comply with current regulations , fitting and sealing of new shower tray ,retiling and grouting walls , refitting any/all hardware ,fitting new shower screen and clearing away all waste .... £ 750 labour is a good price .

Thanks to all - you are spot on with scope of work Olympia. I am just out of touch with prices not having got involved with bathroom stuff for over 12 years when I quickly learnt about Dolphin's sales strategy which would have been twice the price I actually paid an independent pluimber to do the work.

Question now is whether I help her go for the thermostaticTriton rather than her skimping on a cheaper unit given the water pressure has been patchy at times. She has a combi boiler.

If it's a combi boiler the flow rate through the shower will be determined by how much heat the combi boiler can generate rather than the supply pressure.

A thermostatic shower mixer might be troublesome as they tend to work best with a constant temperature of hot water whereas, with a combi boiler, temperature depends on flow because you have a constant rate of heat input.

FWIW my Triton shower leaked when it was put in (from the seal around the on/off valve) - it fixed itself by magic, however, and now works fine (temperature & flow wise) - but the shower is all of 6' from the boiler output connected by a straight length of pipe (boiler is immediately below the bathroom) so about as optimal as it's possible to get, temperature loss wise.

It even works when someone starts the dishwasher/flushes the loo/runs the sink downstairs.. which is more than I can say for my parents non thermostatic shower (where they usually seem to try to scald and/or freeze me at some point ;D)

The dreaded Screwfix have one reduced to £69.99 just now - no idea if it is any good but it is Triton.

As osprey says ,   Screw fix have the  Triton" Tesla" thermostatic bar mixer reduced even further now was £169 a couple of months ago

.Now   58 quid now :o :o :o
I've fitted plenty of Triton thermo bar mixers onto Combi systems over the past couple of years or so & no come backs at all.

 So recommended from  :y :y :y

I fitted a Mira thermostatic shower some time ago. It works very well and keeps a good constant temp flow despite the water feed being tortuous. A few years back Mira were recon'd to be one of the best, I don't know if the other makes have caught up yet.
