Title: Halfords deals. (Tool storage)
Post by: feeutfo on 04 November 2011, 16:52:11
They have a sale of sorts on again. 30% off various stuff, but my interest specifically...

Tool storage. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/categorydisplay_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_categoryId_255212_langId_-1

Of note, black draws equal roller barings. Regardless of body colour. Red draws are friction sliders and are, frankly, awful. Red chassis but black draws as the link are far better, roller baring draw runners, snap shut of sorts, with liners. Fairly sturdy IMO. Not the same design is the Black professional as this http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_745201_langId_-1_categoryId_255214  with lift latch on the draw handle...

but is considerably cheaper, and with the middle section... http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_208831_categoryId_255214_langId_-1?cm_sp=Intelligent_Offer-_-Product_Details_Zone_1-_-Blank&iozone=PDPz1
...for £70 adds up to more storage space for less money.

Nearly stumped up.... Nearly.  :-\

Yep, hinged and normal style £40, or both for £80, or 2 for one, or 50% off.
Yes they are in the sale.  ;D

Just bought one of these 7 drawer models and a set of the hinged ratchets. Spanners are good, the drawer unit, while having good ball bearing runners, is otherwise fairly thin metal, one drawback is that the lid is connected to vertical metal slides which lock the drawers, however, these can be easily removed to allow drawers to be opened with the lid closed. It takes most of my loose tools, and has freed up a lot of shelf space. :y :y :y

Also just purchased a set of flexible ratchet spanners.

Thinking of giving it to my dad as a Christmas present, wouldn't be the first time. :p

To be fair, he pretty much buys everything he wants/needs but he's always happy to get some new tools.  ;D

Good stuff. :y never had a problem with the ratchet spanners.

Tool storage boxes, red chassis ones are a little thin i guess. But no worse than my syches and pickavant, which has no ball roller runners and has lasted years while stuffed full.

The black advanced set is almost twice the money. For home use it seems unnecessary to spend more. Depends I guess.  :-\

I have the Clarke one, similar to the ball bearing'd red Halfords one, seems a bit more sturdy IMHO. Bit pricey if not on VAT free day though.

No drawer liners with Clarke one though.

Indeed, Clarke are more sturdy. But for the money, in the size I need iirc I'll be looking at £500 odd. Ok for industrial strength, but ott for my use.

To get bigger than I have I'll need, well, as posted above. Which gives £270 for the Halfords. How much is Clarke for roll cab, middle draws and top chest?

You'll have to look on MachineMar website, then wait for VAT free day :y

Only the HD (is that right) do.  The £100+VAT for 9 drawer red and black range doesn't

Ah yes, I treated myself to the bigger ones.

Having said that, the old and cheap Clarke one is still going strong and has been pretty bulletproof.

I tried to find some drawer liner stuff to replace the missing bits in my ex-display Halfords chest.. have you seen how much that stuff costs?  :o

I expected it to be a fiver, not £20.. ;D

My Clarke one (the aforementioned (now) £100 9 drawer, with the £60 2 drawer under it) have been good as gold (once I made some liners). Can't fault them.

As you know, I'm not normally Clarke Tool's biggest fan. But for the money, I like these.

My biggest concern is would they withstand being carted everywhere, constantly lifted and dropped etc....  :-\

I'm not sure the (current) Halfords red ones would stand up so well  :y though the black ones would, I think.

Having said that, I'm not sure I can pick mine up now they're full of tools.. just call me Mr Muscle ;D

(I say 'current' because there's a noticeable difference between the current red 'professional' range and the older, darker red, 'professional' range.. and hey, when did we get an edit button? [edit] break, please don't ban me, TB! ;D)

Yes I have to say mines a bit of a hernia maker!

I took it to the East Lancs and was branded the tool box self-abuser (jokingly)........they thought it was great to have a ready supply of tools!

I'll have to pop in and have a look then... Need a Top Box for the van as I don't like the plastic crap that's been supplied ::) Then need a couple of other bits (although most of it can be made up from my "spare" tools ::)) to make life easier :y

similar items in Clarke premium range come to £370 with vat. £295 odd without vat. But also gives a few less draws.

Do you need the strength of the more expensive ones if it's just staying at home? I'm thinking along the lines of savings made being spent on tools :D

I did that recently - walked into Halfords and came out with the roll cab, middle cab, top cab and three complete trays of tools.. so now I have two of most things and at least one of everything ;D £600 later....

... I really wish I'd taken my friend and his Trade Card! ;D (although most of that stuff was on offer anyway, and last time I used his Trade Card I only saved ~10% on tools - 40% on wiper blades, mind)

I know where they went, SWMBO is at this very moment picking up a drawer liner from Halfords' display toolbox which is missing from the one from stock bought yesterday. ::) ::) ::)
