Title: MX5 Brake service.
Post by: albitz on 05 November 2011, 09:24:13
Mates wife has a 9 year old MX5. She put it in a garage (not main dealer) to have the brakes sorted as they didnt inspire much confidence. Discs and pads were renewed all round plus the handbrake mechanism was found to be siezed/knackered and was renewed.Dont know exactly what that involves, but probably new cable and a few other bits & pieces.
Question is,how much was she charged ? Please feel free to have a guesstimate and I will post the correct figure up later.
The fact that the garage has big windows might be a clue. ::) ;)

The rear calipers have a habit of seizing so if it was a main dealer I suspect they have replaced them with new and not recon calipers, I would say about £500

Personally, I would have rebuilt the calipers with new pistons and seals, i've done a few now and its a lot cheaper than recon ones

The bill was.............wait for it....................

£1065. :o :o :o :o

I am going to ask him to let me se the bill, just to see exactly how they have tried to justify this.Sounds like thinly disguised theft to me. >:(

That's ridiculous.

MX5's are very cheap to maintain and service.  Could buy another MX5 for that money.

That's what I was going to say! Although 9 years old would make it a Mk2, and I think you can only get Mk1s for around that price..

Even so that's a ridiculous price. I'm in the wrong business..

Anyone want the pads changing on their Omega? Only £400! Bargain! Act now! ;D

Yep, and also garages have a habit of not bothering to find out how to retract the pistons properly before charging in IME. ;)

£1095 is crazy money, though. :o If they'd tried that one me they would be putting the old ones back on.

I'd be interested to see their "break down" on that too
