So yesterday I decided I would change the spark plugs on my 2.5 mig, pulled the three out of the right bank, all NGK r's then went to the more difficult left bank and they were all old manky looking GM plugs! It seems to me like only the right bank was done as it was too much hassle to do the left bank!!! Lazy barstewards!!!
-
Yup, been there before. MotherT's cam cover gasket failed on left bank, right bank gasket was squishy, still good, they only changed the easy side!
-
Not a big surprise tbh.The most common one is they change 5 plugs but dont bother with the n/s/r which is the most awkward one. ::)
-
Mine was the same; driver's side plugs were OK-ish, the passenger side were very bad. Broke 2 of the passenger side leads too.
What genius decided to run the engine wiring directly over the plugs?

Yes I did swear at that one a little lol :D

had that happen when i had a service done at a local vauxhall dealer
-
No way!! Really!?!?
-
Quite a common habit at VX dealers. ;)
-
Accept the fact that most dealers are every bit as bad as the worse backstreet garage...
-
The difference being, a dealer will probably give you a free cup of instant coffee before relieving you of a couple of months salary. :y :D

Only more expensive...

You've not been to my local one then. ;D You're lucky if they let you use a chair.

That's crazy, I thought the main dealers, being Vauxhall "specialist" would be more likely to fit all 6 plugs!! :o

What makes you think they are specialists ???
-
I went into the Braintree stealers on Friday.Asked for 6 plugs for my v6,checked that they still take trade club card, answer was yes.
That will be £17 odd please.Nope Trade club price is £1.51 plus vat each, that aint £17 odd. I have the price onscreen in front of me sir blah blah blah............calls manager.Manager confirms trade club price is £17 odd.
I didnt even bother trying to have a conversation with the cretin.Just walked out and left him mumbling and holding 6 plugs.
rather timewasting tossers. >:(
-
Maths, clearly not their strong point..
I wondered if perhaps they were trying to sell you 3.2 plugs (4-way ones), but they work out at £19 inc VAT, so it can't be that either..
£10 for the plugs and £7 for their pocket? ;)
-

It matters not whether the dealer sells Ladas or Lambourginis. If the engineer/mechanic/technician/fitter/YTS trainee gets the chance to gain some time on their jobcard so they can buy more marbars, be assured, they will.
And the dealer will still claim the full hours in cash from the customer as per the book, not those hours actually 'worked'.
Thats where 'profit' lives........
-
And what their mechanics are bonused on, according to a Toyota dealer who offered a friend of mine a job (said friend told him "You probably couldn't pay what my [IT] job does..", the dealer countered with "Well our top mechanic took home £75k this year..").
Oh and for '4-way' in my post above, read '4 electrode' .. I couldn't remember the word "electrode" for love nor money :-[
-
£17.12 ???
He's charging you "trade" price £1.78 + VAT = £2.14 then he's making you buy 2 packs of 4 = 8 plugs
8 X 2.14 =17.12 :(

Took my pf cdx to the dealers to diagnose a servo tronic issue. They said they "had one guy there still trained on the omega, so I was in luck!". Oh yeah, I thought.
Told him the problem, sat in reception. Returned after half an hour to tell me the wishbone bushes where shot, and there was an oil leak. Oh really? Would that cause the steering to go stiff? Possibly. He said. Rubbish I said.
Have you plugged it into tech 2 to diagnose the servotronic relay? As asked! No....! Long story short, he showed me the bushes, car on the ramp. Ok, I'll fix that, what about the relay/tech2 etc... He didn't know where the diagnostic port was, didn't know where to find srvotronic on the pc based (?) menus, but eventually confirmed relay failed. When asked where it was he said in the fuse box. No i said, it's behind the glove box, but which one? It's in the fuse box. So what are the relays behind the glove box? Shook head, "....car security...?"
no St relay!
"no"... parts will tell you".
Parts gave me a print out, it's behind the glove box(on pre face lift).
Ok, new relay, £95. No return on electricals! "but he's just diagnosed it via tech2!" I protested.
Sorry.
This was almost 8 years ago. Last omega trained mech was useless and long in the tooth even then. He must have retired by now.
So I'd be surprised if the latest hoodies they now employ even know what an omega is, much less how to change the plugs. Hence they want you to bin your omega and buy a car they now sell and think they know how to fix. Which they don't! Every story I hear re dealers is a nightmare.
So, AVOID THE DEALERS. unless you enjoy gang rape and are prepared to pay heavily for it.

when i worked for a citroen dealer, the book time for replacing all the hydraulic pipes front to rear on a BX, including dropping out the rear subframe was 16hrs. i regulary did this in 8hrs, customer charged 16hrs, the bloomin pipes only cost 90 odd quid to buy in. yeh thats where the profit is. :o

Nope - I even got him to take one out of the box to check they were twins - then walked out. :D ;D

Nope, not that either Nige.He had 6 plugs in a neat little pile on the counter. :y
-
Doesn't mean he wasn't trying to charge you for 8, though.. then they get to keep the spare two "for free" ;D
-
I must say,I find the parts dept. at Underwoods Colchester reasonable to deal with. Not brilliant, but better than most.

Possible I suppose. He was disappointed if that was his plan. ;)

I've had reasonable experiences there, once the manager explains to the spotty yoof on the counter that the Johnnycboy's ABS TC is acceptable ::) ::)
TBH, I tend to use Andyc at Drive for all my parts requirements now... It's a 100 mile round trip but I generally try to tie it in with another reason for travelling that way or just buy plenty of oil to justify it ::) ::)
-
Never had a problem getting TC accepted at Colchester. They are just sooooo slow. Its best to take a deckchair or similar with you when you go. :y ::)
-
im a mechanic and i work if u like a (back street garage) non main dealer and because we dont get a bonus sceem like main dealers its not in my interest to cut corners to make up time its just it takes aslong as it takes but we only charge book times so if it takes a bit longer than that its our companys loss not mine but then again i dont get payed 75k a year so i dont think my boss loses out by much. we class our selfs as a decent garage that treats customers fairly etc etc and we are cheaper than main dealers. The company i work for is top marques in hitchin.

I had an issue with my local stealers a few years back where they were trying to sell me an oil cooler at full prices saying it was TC price. In fact it was the Ass(istant) Part Manager at the time (since moved on)
I calmly refused and went next door to look at a new Corsa. Left my details with the salesman to call me with his best offer because I was 'really interested' in one for the wife. I wasn't but the sequence of events I wanted to happen had already started.
I waited for the call and said sorry I will not be going through with it. When asked why I explained the issue with the parts dept and that I had been mugged off with the price. I also said that I had arranged through someone else to get the part at a rival dealers at the price it should have been" Send me an email with the details" He asked. So I did and also mentioned that I was an active member of a car forum dedicated to the omega.
Low and behold I received a call from the Parts manager apologising and offering me some free stuff the next time I came in and made an order.
Long and short of it is that the Ass(istant) Parts Manager is no longer there, I always get TC or trade price on parts and when I go in I dont need to show my ABS card :y

i am going over old ground here personally but i thought exactly the same as you i.e. that you take your vauxhall to...errrm... vauxhall when something's wrong. how naive i was.
ive told this story a couple of times but in short i took my car to the dealers in northampton with a misfire. anyway the problem still continued so i sought help on here. took it to DLK and i couldn't believe they missed the fact that one lead was out and my spark plug wells were filled with oil due to my cam cover gasket needing replacing. obviously daz sorted it and a job well done.
i got a not a couple of months back... ''mr webb, you are due a serv....................... FEK OFF!!!!!!!!
-
oh and £250 they charged me for NOT fixing my car!!!!! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

I use York Ward & Rowlett at Wellingborough and have had no probs at all with ABS TC card there - don't need to show it now and get trade on non TC parts. Parts Manager and all parts guys efficient and helpful.
With regards to 5/6 plud changes found this on both our Elites - whats the problem? With the right kit its no problem to chang the back one on the passenger bank, just a bit awkward ;)

I deal with Vauxhall dealers named Townparks Vauxhall in Antrim in Northern Ireland, so much so that we all know each other by first names and it turns out one guy is going out with my mates sister and the other guy lives in the same town as me, anyway, back to the point, these guys are usually pretty sh1t hot when it comes to their knowledge, and they always give me TC prices and try to give me discount on parts that aren't listed as TC parts!
They have also recommended places that I can go to in order tO save money on certain things like Power steering hoses, by sending me to the likes of hydraulic hose manufacturers!
That's said I have never left my car to be worked on by their mechanics because I do nearly all my own work anyway!

Used W. Grose in Northampton a couple of times for "urgent" spares - no probs with TC, and gave me trade on non-TC parts :y

Similar story for me too, my local 'burton brothers' is good to me, usually get a good discount to or near to trade, and have been told on a couple of occasions 'don't buy it here we get it from Bennetts, go there for it'
Again though I haven't left a car there I don't want to end up hating them!!

I use Charles Warner in Lincoln, nice to deal with - no probs
