Title: Front Brakes, the next chapter............
Post by: MV6Matt on 07 November 2011, 05:18:39
I've started to noticed the smell of hot metal as I get out of the car after a drive.

Both front alloys are warm and the calipers are warmer.

What needs adjusting?

Normal after hard use. If driving sensibly then somethings binding. Unusual on both sides though...?

Driving between parents and the hospice - nothing  radical.

But I don't smell hot metal usually and don't have warm alloys. The smell is very noticeable. Different Alloys now I've got my Winter tyres. A possibility as they have small gaps between spoke (unlike the 19" monsters)?

Doesn't seem likely

Help!

jack it up and spin the wheels, see if the brakes are binding?

Sounds like a plan, I'll try it when I can.

Thanks Chris

You sure the smell is from the area of the brakes Matt ? I would expect the alloys to be warm and the calipers to be warmer after any drive of a few miles, although it depends how warm really.Just wondering if that fact may have led to the assumption that the smell was also from there ?  :-\
If your sure its from there, are you sure the wheels are correct fit for your car ? No possibility of them fouling the calipers  or similar ?
When you say the smell is metallic - any more descriptive words you can think of ? I cant think what a metallic smell would be like, if that makes sense. :-\

Hi Albs,

The smell is of Hot metal. I don't really know how else to describe it.

The alloys are 16" Omega wheels that I got in the summer.

You remember the Big 19"'s I guess? Never had a problem with them. Just the seized caliper/master cylinder thing (as you know).

I'll try raising the car and spinning the wheels (as Chris suggested) and see if I can hear anything.

Thanks anyway

Matthew

Just seems strange to have trouble with both front brakes at the same time, unless the garage which did the work has done something badly wrong ?
Might be worth removing the wheels after spinning them to look for evidence of rubbing/fouling - something bright and shiny which shouldnt be. :-\ Shine a torch into all the nooks and crannies etc. ;)

I wonder if the garage are using the wrong lube on the caliper slider pins or something daft...? Something like copper slip?

Oh, and I have seen a certain member return form a test drive with brakes literally smoking. yes the brakes where exceptionally hot with blue disc, but the smoke was from a cleaning agent we'd used on the wheel to free off the gunk that had stuck the wheel to the hub and disc.

Point being, if the brakes get hot the heat will naturally transfer to the alloy wheel.
