Title: Oil consumption on Mk4 Astra x16xe
Post by: Omega_Dan on 08 November 2011, 18:38:10
Ive heard these engine use a fair bit of oil. My mate again is having trouble with oil comsumption. Its burning easily 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles miles and is checking it every few days. Car has no tell tale signs of any problems. Its not smoking  and theres no performance loss but it costs him a tenner a month in oil. :o

Any ideas?

astra g's normally consume 0.6 litre/1000 km.. probably mk4s are not that different ..

also if its used on short journeys it will .. so normal imo..

I had this with my 1.8 Veccy B, and my 1.6 Astra G  ;D

I ended up changing head gasket and stem seals - which just made the consumption worse!!

Only really leaves the rings.

If you let it idle for about 5 mins, and then give it a long hard rev, what comes out of the exhaust?

They are prone to burning oil,I've seen several quite low milage engines do it.

They can consume a bit of oil and its normaly a sign of one thing, poor servicing!. The oil control rings can get gummed up and the breathers clogged all of which increases the consumption rate.

Cleaning the breathers out, a few short oil changes and confirmation that things are clean inside plus a good engine flush and forte fuel treatment can often recover the situation (check the pickup after the flush!)

This is making me feel very positive about my new Zafira which has a Z16XE engine :y Flushing the engine to get rid of plenty of silt built up from the wrong spark plugs being used on its last service :)

Any ideas?

I was talking to the Guys at Vauxhall a few months ago and apparently which I found rather shocking, Vauxhalls tollerance for a new car on using engine oil is a Litre per 1000miles  :o

Toyota is the same (1ZZ-FE in the MR2 has somewhat of an oil control ring issue pre 2003) - anyone would think we were still living in the 80s..

Many moons ago I bought a 1300 allagro which had done 14k miles,it consumed a pint of oil every 250 or so miles which at the time Austin Rover thought was acceptable consumption,I bloody didn't and had the motor rebored and new pistons and rings fitted,it never used oil again in the 60 k that I put on it.

Which is what it is going compared to the omega which i believe is 0.075 litres per 1000km (600miles)

My dad used to have a Vx Victor, the original one with the wrap-around windscreen, bought new.

It used 1 pint every 300 miles, Vx said that was within limits.

When he sold it, it had done in excess of 100k, still only used 1 pint every 300 miles.

As an aside, the tyres did 80k, can't remember the make.
