Title: oops, a silly....
Post by: Ken T on 08 November 2011, 23:27:30
I was fitting my front end LPG last weekend, and bent the power steering reservoir pipe forward to get more space, pretty cramped under a V6  bonnet. It sat quite nicely, jammed against something. I started the car after work, no problems so all ready for Monday morn. My son remarked on how the steering reservoir was a bit low, but my mind was on other things so....

I started up on the drive to work and noticed a high pitched whine  :o :o :o . Steering was a bit... but useable, so I set off on my jaunt along the M62. Strange noises started coming, whining and when changing lanes etc, what was wrong ?. I spent the next hour puzzling if it was the steering pump, or the rack, I had fitted the cabin cable next to the steering column so could it be that, generally worrying about everything.  :'( :'( :'(

When I got to work, parking was a pain no assistance available at all, oh *******. The place I work is  short of car accessory shops, so I called at the local garage to see if they had any power steering, unfortunately not. I opened the bonnet to check how empty and see any damage and ................

I had forgotten to release the power steering fluid pipe from where I had jammed it, it must have been closed off and starved the system of fluid. I released it and normal service resumed.

It amazes me the number of systems on the engine, there are masses of pipes, sensors, cables etc that all need to be connected for the engine to work at its best. You miss one and the whole thing goes to pot. Amazing really how well they last, this car has 90K miles and 8 years under its belt and still going strong. Pretty good engineering.

I agree tigger :y
In todays modern engineering world, if the engine is looked after properly, why should it not last up to 500K :y
Better than the days of the 1200 Cortina, recon after 30,000 ;D

Well i'm pleased it turned out to be 'summat & nowt' Ken, you had me going there for a while as when I was reading down the post I expected to see at least a busted pipe etc! :D
Maybe you should turn your hand to writing Thrillers?  ;D ;) :y

Always hoped my Silver Bullet would see 200k...  ...which probably means getting another couple of years from it...
