Interesting article in The Sunday Times. Taken from the "ingear" motoring supplement.
1971.......35,948 petrol stations in the U.K
1991.......19,247 petrol stations in the U.K
2011........8,763 petrol stations in the U.K
Be careful you don't run dry. ;)

You can probably thank supermarkets for that, as they often turn petrol into a loss-leader to get people into the store.. thus normal garages can't compete.
ISTR Asda dropped the price of petrol to 128.9p per litre recently, and that's some 6p cheaper than my nearest garages - I can only imagine they're selling it at a loss for the publicity & store trade..

Yes, Aaron. I absolutely agree. :y

bigger fuel tanks, more motorways, better mpg? All has an effect.

.. cars that don't need a new set of brake shoes and a clutch either side of the Pennines...

TB still has days like that, although just replace Pennines with Milton Keynes ;D ;D ;D

Whats this, pick on TB day >:(
Just done another 10,000 miles of rubber in a forecourt, whilst casting insults about their skills and headgear. How much simpler can a petrol station business be, yet they still screw it up. Effing mongrels.

Tesco Sandhurst is normally (on their own admission, in South Today interview) the most expensive Tesco in the UK for petrol where virtually all of the other local petrol stations have closed. >:( >:( >:(
This is one of the reasons I generally use the Total garage just up the road from me, even though it is 1-2p a litre more expensive, plus the queues are shorter.

The Tesco closest to us only has a small independent to compete with. They usually undercut it by a paltry 1p a litre, presently 139.9 against 138.9. I make the five mile round trip to BP instead. They currently charge 131.9. When Tesco finally get rid of all competition they will be in an unchallenged position, and will charge whatever they like. Crooks.... >:( >:(

Without a doubt the supermarket effect.
When I first moved to Spain it was great not having to hunt around for "cheap" petrol because even on Motorways it was the same price as everywhere else. Great for rural communities where your next station is perhaps another 20 miles on. Our local garage has lots of customers who buy 5 litres or 25 litres of petrol or diesel for their farm equipment and they would be gutted if our local station closes.
I have had 3 tank fuls of petrol for the Omega in a week as we troll around looking at 4x4s. The most expensive was 1.329 euro a litre and the cheapest at a supermarket of course) was 1.269. That is a good saving......................... :(
