Title: Work advice needed
Post by: JonArgraig on 12 March 2008, 12:03:07
I got taken away to a meeting room last night by the Boss for a chat, a tad worried as he only desends from the Gods normaly to sack some one.

He informed me there is a new job coming up at our site, and wants me to apply for it. The job in question is only been offered to people well above my pay grade and time in the firm, but when I pointed that out he said he will personaly back my appilaction when it goes off to the HR department.

so does he...

A) Have some major faith in my skills :)
B) He's after some thing :(

So should I go for it ? If I got the job it woud piss a fair few people off, but hell its not a school play ground, cant be every ones friend.

But at the same time the job would be a massive leap in responabilty

mmm...

Promotion is always good .. financialy, personal pride, and is neccesssary to progress.

You have been offered a chance of promotion.. yes more work, and responsibility, but more rewards as well.

The only person who can stop you succeeding is you, what do you have to lose by going for it anyway .. you get the job .. great, you don't .. you stay where you are for now .. a no lose situation .. :)

:)

I'm goingto go for it,

Only concean is that, well I blagged my way into the firm in the first place, though I was honest about my lack of IT skills in the interview I think it was my cheek that got me in,

Just worried I'll end up over my head if I do get it

Go for it :)

If you have concerns about technical expertise, get registered on any relevant techie forums to the work you do and ask away when you hit a problem, I've alays found an answer there if it can't be found at work!

Google every tech issue too, I work in IT for a large firm and often use Google to track server issues.

Makes you look brainy too when it works  :P

Do it

I am 24 and I'm responsible for a lot of NHS Infrastrucure and Information Systems, and I'm on a few grades higher than most people in the building twice my age.

I get some resentment, but so what - most of the people that resent me couldn't do what I do :y

And as already commented, google is your friend ;) (It's certainly mine!)

Go for it mate -- the blagging to get in the firm paid off -- they obviously think you can do it -- you just have to convince yourself -- it worked last time  :y

I would go for it.  I was in the same situation about ten months ago when I was told by my line manager about an upcoming job.

You can go through the application process and see if the job is sold to you in a way that makes you want it.  If all else fails, you can simply turn it down and you're no worse off.

Mr Hagon.

i was offered the job as site foreman once for a company, i didnt want it because of all the crap that went with it (contract mangers balls up and pass the buck, continuosly) 2 days later i was told i had no more work as i didnt seem that bothered about my job, my mistake. i have since worked again for the company on various contracts. and not !!! as site foreman may i add.

Going from experience i would take the job if i was in your position. your boss must have great  confidence in you and a lot of trust.  to personally have his backing i would feel more confident in my job as well. hopefully biiger salary for the missus to spend for you lol    :y

what is the job?

Tactical Team Leader for the income protection team

I work in the gambling industy and I am at the moment a mere 1st line software engineer but I am the only person in the firm (UK atleast) that has as ever worked out in the field so to speak in the gambling trade (Casino's and bookies), Ive also a huge security and law enforcement back ground, and for the last 4 months Ive been working with the Income protection team teaching them and there new staff how things realy work out there, how to interview staff correctly (think most of them have just watched the Bill for a week...) and other stuff you cant see from a computer screen andprint outs, Ive also taken the lead on several high profile cases in the UK ad Europe.

Had another chat with the Boss yesterday as I saw the base requirements for the job, out of the 10 "must have's" I have 1 :(

He told me "I wrote the requirements, and I've already seen your CV, I wouldn't back you if I didn't think your up for it" :)

So sod it, I'm off for it, at worse some one else will get it and there will be a opening for there job.
