Title: I am one of the lucky ones, I still have a Job.
Post by: Vamps on 11 November 2011, 21:15:36
Big meeting today, one of two, for the whole of the service area, includes loads of different departments / services.

Anyway we were all given a talk on the new structure and then had to go and collect a personal envelope :'(  I was towards the back of my que saw a few people in tears and others with upset looks.....Some jobs will no longer exist, others changed and downgraded after you reapply sometimes 2 or 3 people for one Job.

Lots of stuff in the envelope but only interested in the one line, initially, mine......... 'You have been slotted into the role of'.........in other words, I still have my Job, our whole team safe, this time!   I was not over worried until the actual meeting and they said that there were people to speak to with regard to some 'training' that was available........ Yeh, how to write a cv.... ::) ::) ::)

Some good news among the bad - what a way to learn about any change to your circumstances. :(

Glad to hear your job is safe - you'd think they'd handle it slightly more personally & delicately than an envelope to open in front of everyone, though, especially after things like this have been in the news recently: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2060044/TfL-manager-falls-storeys-death-colleagues-moments-told-redundant.html  :-\

Those who have to reapply for their jobs in competition with others will be told on 23rd December if they have been successful.........just in time for Christmas. :( :(

There's something perverted in that - you'd think there was some bastid sitting working out ways to screw with people's emotions and taking uncalled for pleasure in it.

It's about time that a lot of those who are deciding the fate of others in this way were bitch-slapped into a state of common decency.

As a matter of fact I’ll go further by saying that the sooner such people are kicked the opps out into the gutter where they belong, the better.

Vamps, glad you have kept your job and I'm sorry to hear about your colleagues. I would suggest that those that are having to reapply for their jobs, get their CV's out in the market and apply for other jobs, so they might get another job or some interviews lined up before the 23rd December. Even if they then hear the worst then they psychologically will have other irons in the fire, to cushion the blow and hopefully make the best of a bad situation at Christmas. Hopefully, some will find alternative employment, a better job and employer.

I've only an old copy of Tolley's Employment Handbook so this might be out of date.

If more than 20 people are being made redundant then there must be a consultation period with employee representatives. Are more than 20 being made redundant?

IMHO handing people envelopes instead of having a personal meeting is a cowardly way of handing things. To me, the very worst thing of being an employer in the past was making people redundant, having to get rid of very good people was hard, but the alternative would have been worse, bankruptcy and everybody losing their job.  :'( :'( :'( I always did this with a personal meeting and would explain why such a sad action was necessary and to personally thank them for all their hard work.

Everything has been done by the book. Unions and HR involved ::) ::) ::)

A big relief for you Vamps but the employer conduct leaves a bit to be desired and you will obviously need to be prepared for future action of this nature. Selection for redundancy schemes are so difficult to comprehend for those that lose out and all sorts favouritism /nepotism comes into play dressed up as something else. Keep your eye on the situation - if you have any info on employer's selection for redundancy process - read it now and understand how it is supposed to work. You never know when you may need it and how to identify the loaded questions.
