Title: Insurance for Omega
Post by: El_Swervo on 12 November 2011, 11:24:53
Hello all,

I was wondering what insurance companies people used for their Omega. I have just had a quote for my new car, CDX estate 2001, and its a higher risk than my  CD estate from 1996. They are not really any different in the scheme of things, but much higher with my insurer. Time to shop around!
Any recomendations?  I have been on con-pare the Merkin.com and looks a bit pricy on there too :o
Forgive me if this subject has been done before!

as ever will depend on your age, no claims discount etc, but i found direct line were cheapest when i insured my 2001 2.6 cdx with them. £315 fully comp.
Then sold the omega, bought a 2002 318 bmw, and they wanted another £157!  >:(
so i swiftly cancelled and after half an hours searching online shielas wheels quoted me £274, fully comp with national breakdown recovery.
I honestly think that every insurance company just plucks a number out of thin air and hopes you go with them!!

if you want cheap insurance you have to work hard for it
about 3 weeks before its up
first go to all the compare sites [ top tip never give you real phone number else you will get lots of sales calls]
you can then try the phonebook [ only use 0800 numbers][be prepared for companys already having your details]
then walk down the road  and check out all the local brokers
then when you have your cheapest prices check the web for cash back sites[top tip check your top 10 qotes on the compare sites]
if you cant save any money this way then phone the companys direct[0800]
you have to but in time and effort
in total i bet i spent 2 days on the phone/web/high road
my insurance back in may was approx 270 pounds[but iam a old git] for a 2.5 diesel but by hard work and research i got it down to £103.78  :y :yfully comp protected no claims bonus]
also be aware that cash back sites take time to pay you back the money

I'm with Hastings as they were cheapest with reasonable excesses. Paid £238 fully comp.

I used Quotezone as the search engine aggregator (there are other low profile ones) rather than the high profile heavily advertised ones (the adverts have to be paid for by somebody, guess who?). This is from the insurance industry experience I've had.

My advice is to check prices and excesses across multiple aggregators as they do vary and then check the Insurance companies website as you may get an even better deal.

Mine was through a branded Hastings name and website as the main aggregators insist that no prices are cheaper on the particular brand and website that they display on their website.

talking about rip offs i phoned my insurance company to swap insurance from a 1999 (t)cdx 2.5 mfl to a 2000 (x) cdx 2.5 f/l the robbing b@st@rds told me with the admin charge it would be an extra £264.76  >:( >:( >:(  when i asked why the huge increase they replied with "because the computer says so" couldnt even explain it themselves  >:( >:(
needless to say i gave them a right mouthfull over the phone as i have been with them for some time and cancelled my insurance there and then. after my rant they said they could reduce it by £100, but being in such a rage and not seeing why the extra cost was being incurred told them to shove it  :y  went round all the sites, telephones etc as previous poster and eventually got a traders insurance for less than i was paying for the original cdx, i now pay £345.00 which covers me for up to 5 cars fully comp including sports cars and light trucks  :y
so it really pays to do the few days of trawling web sites and going round the different brokers and companies  :y

I went with Aviva because they were by far the cheapest. Cheapest being somewhat of a 4 figure number in my case but still. I'm still paying less with the Omega than the quote I got on a 04 plate 1.4 Corsa. Just under £2000. Other companies wanted upwards of £7k for it basically saying they thought I would write the car off 6 times a year. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask.

I'm with Pru (Churchill) paying £305 this year. This includes no claim bonus protection, legal protection and a hire car for a fortnight whether my fault or not, been with them for some time now.
I look at the web then tell the Pru this is what so & so are quoting it usually gets a reduction.

God, I'm glad I'm an old fart ;D

In the early nineties (quick calculation - before you were born ;D), I had a quote for £3k (cheapest) :o.  Bearing in mind I bought my first 3 bed semi with garage that same year for £55k, that shows what £3k was worth then :o :o.  Sold car before insurance ran out.

I should add, that was more than thirty years ago now. Plod was more plodding way back then..... ::) ::) ::) ;)

Well, I knew it would be interesting to hear what other people pay(ed). A few to try then, Monday morning, not going to use the car for a week so I have time to have a look.
Thanks for all the replies! :y

I will post the result, hopefully a good one :-\

if I was a teenager I would be walking! or riding one of those newfangled boneshaker bi-cyle thingies ;D

I'd maybe give Tesco a bell. Last time my insurance was due I had a Jaguar XJR supercharged V8, Swiftcover wanted £630 to renew, insurer from Jag forum £475. Various from compare sites was between £450 and £550. In the finish went with Tesco at £365 fully comp and £300 excess. When I swapped to the 3.2 Omega with 10 months left to run they gave me £30 back after the changeover fee was deducted.

hi ya el-swervy,

every single year you must shop around. companies ''hoik'' people in with good deals and savings through comparison sites and then bank on a certain percentage not being bothered to change next year.... so in effect by staying the next year you are going to pay more and be paying for the company to recoup their initial ''hoiking'' deal as opposed to paying what the insurance is actually worth!!!  >:( >:( >:( >:(

i was with tesco and as they put my renewal up by £300  >:( i went on compare the meerkat. got a much better deal with the RAC which included their best UK breakdown service thrown in.

of course i know they'll try and sting me next year to recoup the savings they gave me but as we all know bears may look slow but they can actually get up to 40mph. ill use this speed to snatch my next meal car insurance deal!  :y

OK I have been to my local broker, no joy there, asked if it was whole of market, answer was sort of/yes-ish but no, only 60% ???

Been on all the compare sites today plus cashback ones. What a drag, 3 hours later I have a few options. Of course, if you call them it all changes! >:(

I have narrowed it down to 3 or 4. Starting with Quotemehappy.com internet from Aviva, then Aviva, then Sheilas wheels! :-[ who do  "Bruce" types now :y  All under £400 with legal etc

Will post results,

After an extensive search, Aviva were the cheapest for the level of cover. They currently have a deal on 20% off(?). ::) They also included N C discount protection at a small cost even though loads of others would not even consider it as I had had an at fault accident this year,( a wall jumped out on me in Cornwall and modified my campervan).  :-[
I had another insurance with them also and this gave me further discount, so you can try that one too.
Not the cheapest cars to insure, so shouldn't be too suprised at the high amounts quoted, even for the over 45s!
I cant wait until next year to try all over again.
The cost was a shade over £350, that was a whole lot cheaper than the renewal of over£650!!

Just got my renewal today, £231 (TPF&T).  The cheapest quote I found on the comparison sites was £281 (and Direct Line want £326 - including a 20% "new business" discount and "12 months for the price of 10"!)

I use swiftcover.com in case you want to give them a try.

Also check the policy, especially if travelling abroad. It appears that whilst providing European cover Direct Line only cover you fully comp for the first 3 days abroad and then it is third party. They don't like to tell you this. There are other differences (they don't always just pick a number, they change some of the benefits for low quotes). Things to watch are legal cover, replacement car provision (they can take it away before you get your car back), excesses, etc. etc. I was with Zurich but they quoted me an astronomical price for my Audi (after only charging a very small increment when changed with six months remaining  ???) so I had a good look around but became aware of hidden differences when asking lots of questions. Tip, be careful. It's now insured with Audi (which is of limited use to this forum) but have also changed my wife's car from Zurich to Aviva who had the best combination of price vs features. Glad to see others came to the same conclusion.

Never understood no claims bonus' either. Despite being protected you policy still increases dramatically if you have a claim. Bunch of crooks.

Insurance for teenagers is horrendous.  I first came across it when I had to attend a briefing in the Army and the discussion came up about car insurance.  All the young lads and lasses (late teens / early 20's) were paying around the £2000 mark for insurance on their Corsas and the like, I couldn't believe it.  When I was their age I was driving around in a 3.2 v6 customised MkI Capri and paying about half that.
