Title: Forum speed and stability
Post by: TheBoy on 20 October 2006, 18:06:32
Right, I've killed off the X server rubbish on the server to see if it overcomes some of the probs we've had lately.

I appreciate any comments on performance and stability - is it better, worse, or no different.

are there any particular times of the day we should be keeping an eye on? The reason I ask is because any problems I have encountered have usually been late evening.

In general.

We have been having a few problems with the Redhat server hanging, which I suspect has been the graphical shite that it installs. This has now been disabled as from around 4pm today, hence my question.

The Windows (the host server) tape backups kick off at arounf 23:30 (assuming someone remembers to put the flippin tape in  :-[) which will have a detremental effect for 2 - 3 hrs, so slowdowns in this time period are to be expected.

For what it's worth and purely my opinion (but with some experience),any slow running at busy times is usually the user's network busy ( particularly with BT ), not your own server. Yabb 2.1 is a well proven & stable system. If all members + the same number of guests were on at same time your server should cope 100 times over.

Havent noticed a prob since sometime yesterday......tho carnt remember when  :-[
The site disapeared for about 2/3 mins.

Tho it may have been my end......since we had thunderstorms the other day....my linksys WAG354G (only about 2 months old) wont connect the ADSL connection......so at the mo im forced to use a usb modem that everything routes tho (and dropped from 2M to 1M  :( ) . I think a power surge took out the linksys.

Have to see if i can blag it at PC World for a new one  ;)

I should clarify my last response, as newer members may not be aware of the current setup.

Shortly after launching, our host (Hosting Unlimited) pulled the plug on us  >:(.  In an effort to get the site back up within a few hours, we converted our reference platform to the live production.  This means it is running in an unoptimised Redhat virtual machine, which itself runs on a Windows 2003 server at the end of a DSL line.  Hence my comment about ideal worlds, or not in our case...

The difference a decent router makes...  ...current stats of line hosting this forum...

System up:   102 days 7 hours 10 minutes
Line up:     101 days 19 hours 21 minutes

not often you see a DSL line up for 101 days... ;)
